Monday night while it was windy I looked at the forecast to see what the wind and sky was gonna be like Tuesday before the next system moves in. NWS said mostly sunny with winds 5 to 8 mph and the hourly forecast on TWC said mostly sunny with winds dying dow to 4 mph through out the day.
Hit the usual ice out pond starting around 2:30pm and found half of the pond was open with some of my hot spots having plenty of open water. Last time I was there I was limited on casting with only 2 coves having some open water.
Started off with a glass minnow Husky Jerk HJ-6 and played around with it. Only had 1 small largemouth slowly following it and a bluegill pecking at the lure's side.
Also tried throwing a yellow perch HJ-6, helsinki shad HJ-6, and double rigged weightless Slug Go but never got into anything else. Saw bass and bluegills in their usual areas.
Headed down to check out ice conditions at the private lake. Saw half of the lake was open. Didn't see any familiar faces outside to check on when it'll be fishable so I headed down to the pond at the funeral home.
Stuck with the yellow perch Husky Jerk HJ-6. Played around with a few different jerking retrieves and found the one they were looking for. Single jerk with a 3 to 6 second pause. That caught me a dinky 5 or 6 inch largemouth and a 15" 1 pound 10 ounce largemouth. Also missed out on a crappie that I saw swipe at it and what was either a small largemouth or a yellow perch that came shooting up, grabbed the lure, and quickly went back down after spitting it.
Hit the road around 5:15pm.
Decided to keep the largemouth above to give to a southern grandma who lives next door to me and loves all sort of fish. While filleting it outside I found the fish to be a pregnant female. |

I remember there was that other topic where you said you wanted to head out on Squantz for trout and eyes.
As for open water, I'd say this storm system coming is the system I've been thinking about and we've been waiting for. A late February or early March Nor'easter that will bring much warmer temps behind it, kinda like what Sandy did with the colder temps. |

I dont know exactly how it works but the high winds will cause waves and push the ice to one side of the lake. This in my mind would help brake it up. After the skunk i took on the upper thames yesterday, i am hoping something major will change and bring out some fish. |
