hit derby this am! and well it was cold and windy

we got to the dam and asked a guy if he got anything and he showed us a BIG salmon he had just caught on his second cast!

Needless to say HOPES were high! - we fished the dam on both sides and down at the park where the rivers join!

NOTHING!

So, did he catch the salmon with single fly or an artificial lure with a single free-swinging hook? Wink

The Salmon was caught on a silver/chrome seebill. Spoke with a Guy at Dicks today that told me about it. He said it was big.

I'm not a DEEP Conservation Officer and it's not my intention to bust anyone's balls. Cool I just want to point out that the legal methods for taking Atlantic Salmon in the Housy are limited and none of the Sebile lures is compliant, well, unless you were to swap out their treble hooks for a single free swinging hook:
Quote:
During the open season, the legal method for taking Atlantic salmon in open areas of the Naugatuck River, Housatonic River, and Shetucket River is limited to angling using a single fly, or an artificial lure with a single free swinging hook. Additional weight may not be added to the line.

Just FYI. Wink

a single fly, or an artificial lure with a single free swinging hook. Additional weight may not be added to the line. sounds right if you are salmon fishing?

BUT when folks are there stripper fishing the stuff that is being used is NOT SPECIFIC to salmon fishing

just wondering where the line is drawn?

I DO NOT THINK HE WAS SALMON FISH DO YOU?

Good point! Nobody told da fish to bite it! But I think your supposed to release it. It's good to see salmon coming back up that river. There used to be tons of multi species there as a kid! Got a 28" sea run under that dam as a young'un!

Yeap, like Wanna Fish said, you're supposed to release an illegally caught fish immediately.

It's hard to tell, sometimes, but are you ANGRY? It's apparent that you weren't aware of the regulations regarding Atlantic salmon. If you HAD known that the fisherman had caught the Atlantic salmon illegally, would you have told him? And would you still have told the world and the DEEP all about it on this public forum?

When I was on the Housy earlier this year, I met a fisherman whom I call Rhode Island Mike. I talked with him just after he had hooked and lost an Atlantic salmon at his boat. He said that he had never hooked an Atlantic salmon before and was surprised by how hard it had fought. At the time, I wasn't even aware that there was an open season for Atlantic salmon on the Housy, so I looked up the regulations. That experience and this thread have led to a couple of "What would you do?" discussions. As I mentioned before, I'm not a DEEP Conservation Officer and it's not my intention to bust anyone's balls. But what would YOU do if you were fishing for stripers using a method that's not legal for taking Atlantic salmon and inadvertently caught one?

Nothing you can do but release it. Just like catching a sturgeon on the river.

(LOL) - what i would do should not concern you! - for some reason you seem to think it should! - i am not angry - just do not need someone i have never meet or fished with giving me advise or for that matter telling me what is right and wrong!

i am not on here to get into pissing contests!

i enjoy seeing your posts and reading your stuff!

so here was my point in case you did not get it!
i went fishing yesterday in Derby - a guy caught a FISH on his second cast - so i though it might be a good day it wasn't! the fact that he had a salmon and DID NOT KEEP it i might add was pretty cool to see! - BUT WE DID NOT CATCH anything! - my reply to your posts were simply to SHOW that there is NO RULE that says you have to fish the housy with specific rigs! -- the rule is for targeted fish! - we were fishing JUST fishing! i did not wake - up and say lets go to derby and harvest salmon illegally!

What you would do does not concern me. I didn't give you any advice or tell you what's right and wrong. I apologize for the cognitive dissonance I seem to have caused you.
