I want to install a fish finder on my aluminum boat but do not want to drill holes for the transducer. Any suggestions? I know Humminbird sells a transom mount fish finder but I already have a fish finder and dont feel like buying another one.

Mount it on the bottom of your trolling motor. You'd just need a stainless steel hose clamp and some zip ties.

Hi,

Try making a clamp-on transducer arm such this ......

Or store bought one like this

I have one similar to the one above which I clamp to the gunwale of my wooden guide boat.
Works great ! -> Just make sure you take it off before landing your boat.

Gotta love PVC piping. Definitely a DIY job. If you rig up something like the blue one you could even use a T-joint where the elbow is a drill 2 holes in the vertical pipe to raise and lower with a pin. Love tinkering with stuff and hate plunking down $$$$ for products that are often ill-conceived or poorly manufactured POSs.

Hi RNA,

Yes! PVC is a $$$$ saver.

Need though to drill some small air relief holes at the top and some water holes at the bottom, or the whole thing will twist up due to the air trapped inside!

My guess is the PVC rig would hit its resonant frequency at speed and vibrate like crazy.

Probably not on a trolling motor????? Would need a sturdier material if you're talking small engine.

You could fabricate an aluminum bracket for your transducer and attach it to the hull using Alumiweld:

http://www.alumiweld.com/

NWDarkcloud (aka Bob) uses the stuff a lot. It works really well.

Cool. I thought TIG welding was about your only option for aluminum, and out of my skillset!

Ive used http://www.alumiweld.com/ for years . Its not realy a weld more like soldering but its cool stuff for fabrication and repairs. Fairly easy to use heres some Utube links for useing it http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=alumiweld&oq=alumiweld&gs_l=youtube.12..0i10j0j0i10j0j0i10l5j0.3609.3609.0.8344.1.1.0.0.0.0.141.141.0j1.1.0...0.0...1ac._R_kw3C1v7w
when done right it holds up real well Ive got items ive made that have held up for 15 years now.

Shoot through the hull. Find a spot near the transom that has no strakes under It. Use a small amount of silicone sealer. Only a little sensitivity is lost. Easy to remove too.

You can do that with aluminum hulls?!?! Shocked I didn't know that. . . .
