Sorry, I saw the doomsday predictions flourishing around the local boards about packing up the ice gear and waiting for the middle of April to start up again. Maybe in southern CT the ice is gone, but there is still plenty up north, and it sure feels like winter lately.
Went to West Side pond today for the weekly Thurs. work-release fishing with my co-worker. Mmm, cold, windy, and blue-bird sky...not good...I only set out three tip ups and had the original plan to jig for some perch. Hand augered three 8" holes in approx. 20" of ice. My strikemaster auger was below the drill flanges when it finally caught water, about 8" of solid white ice, and another 10"-12" of black underneath. Jigging was rough in the wind, and it looked hopeless, when the shallow hole went up.
Set the hook, but it popped off halfway to the hole. Grabbed a fresh shiner and reset it, and while walking back the flag went off again. This time I didn't miss the 14" lake snake at the end of the line. Away he went, and I packed up the rig and the jig pole. After a beer and some work bitching, the far flag went up. My buddy took the reigns and landed what looked like a clone of the first fish. Away it went, and we called it a (cold) day.
No parking at West Side, my Colorado stomped into the snowbank along the road, and my buddy just backed his F-250 down off the road. I wouldn't try either of these without good 4x4.
Looking forward to the Highland derby on Sat. Looks like good weather, I've done tourney's there in sun, clouds, rain and sub-zero, but hopefully this will be the first time in the snow! _________________ "Fish now, answer questions later." |

It is possible...here's a few pics of a "lake snake" I caught on a senko a few years back. It's a northern water snake...
