We have at leasts 6" up to 9" on most of our waters out west here. Anybody know if the snow will insulate or harm the ice? Missed that day in science class.

Hi,

......6-9 inches ?

From NOAA National Weather Center - Dated 1/9/2013

Try 20-30 inches in the NW corner.!
And 30-40 inches a bit further south !
And that's not counting drifts.

I'm snowed in here in Winsted with 2-3 feet of snow, and my friend (1 mile away) at Highland Lake called and indicted a minimum of 2-3 feet on his shore-side street !

And more storms + snow coming Shocked .... thumbs down

rain and or freezing rain monday

the snow will put a lot of pressure ont he ice and insulate the hell out of it.

I havnt found 9in on places ive gone.
I fished a lake a couple nights ago where the shore was up in down ain thickness and probably would have broke if we were walking any closer to each other BUT as we went out it was 6in

Safety factor is you could easily fall through and unless someone could find your foot prints (snow drifts hiding them) you could literally disappear

This much snow does kind of suck for ice fishing,
You need very good boots that are weather / water proof, with no leaks other wise walking through all that snow will have your feet begging for mecy before you even drop a line

I dont mind a light solid layer

I went ice fishing in deep snow a couple of years ago on Coventry Lake. As the snow melts, it makes a wet, slushy mess on top of the ice and the water runs into your holes, making them larger. It was NOT fun slogging through it. Wink

I believe that damage inc was referring to the current ice thickness (6-9"), not snow depth. Just stick with the areas that you already were fishing and you will be fine. You will be in for a little workout, but hey, you will definitely keep warm.

Thanks guys. Hitting ball pond tomorrow with a shovel and 4 or five other guys. last sunday there was 6-7" of ice where we fished. i was just wondering if this snow would insulate or make a slushy mess. it's gonna be 5 degrees here tonight so i don't anticipate a problem. i just hope some of the wind cleared some of the snow off the ice!

This is where I get all my laughs in. Everyone makes fun of me because I put all my traps and ice fishing tools in a wicker pack basket, and don't use a sled. I just carry my bait bucket in one hand and my auger in the other. Everyone now can have fun dragging a jet sled through this while I'll be the one who's laughing and not out of breath! Laughing

I'm going to wait a few days before I fish, with all this snow weight on the ice, when you drill a hole the water is forced up the hole from the ice sagging, if you shovel the snow away the water gets worse, sloppy, difficult, and dangerous conditions! -Dan
