I'm looking to purchase a Gas/Propane ice auger. Which one is the best? Most durable? _________________ Oh man... you got Onzo'd! |

I had tons of problems with Eskimo - everything is plastic, so the ethanol kills it. With that said, I'll sell you mine - cheap!! I use a Strikemaster.
Otherwise, go with Jiffy for propane or Strikemaster for gas. That Ion electric looks pretty cool, but have never used it. Nils makes a power head, but don't know about the engine. As far as augers(cutting) go, Nils is the best. |

I talked with a guy out on Coventry Lake yesterday. He has a Strikemaster Battery operated 8". He says he can drill about 40 holes when the ice is about 6 or 7 inches thick. He said he loves it. He payed around $430.00. Takes about 6 to 12 hours to fully charge.
I have the Eskimo Shark 10". Its all Cabela's had at that time I needed 1. I wouldnt buy another. It runs and starts good, but when the gas/oil gets old....Trouble... also no carb. adjustment, factory set. Just my opinion. _________________ <------ my best...8#er...2003 |

Also I would pour out the remaining gas at the end of the season and start the motor to use the existing gas in the carb and fuel lines! A inch of prevention is worth a mile of cure! -Dan |

Honda accord V6, regular gas, but you use it quick enough that it doesn't have time to seperate and go bad. If I had a ''toy'' like a Vette or something that was garaged for long periods of time(like winter) I would certainly add Stabil to the gas. |

I have the Jiffy pro 8" propane. It's easy starting and I've drilled 100+ holes on a 16 oz tank. It is a little heavier than 2 strokes, but with todays fuels causing havoc with carberators and fuel lines, I'm happy with it as it always starts right up and I never get gas on my hands or in my truck. This is my first season with it so don't know long term durability, but so far so good. |

thanks guys!
the propane one sounds like the way to go. Lithium batteries are not perfected yet so I don't know about long term with them. _________________ Oh man... you got Onzo'd! |

I have had the Eskimo Mako 43cc 8" for 7 years now, no problems. I use fresh gas every 21 days, with Sta-Bil Ethanol added to it. Before they had that stuff I used the old red stuff. I run it dry every year when I sharpen the blades and store it. I did have to replace one fuel line, and the cap, but all in all I am pleased with the purchase. I got it from cabelas during the summer when they had an icefishing equip. sale ($189.00) just my .02 With the crap gas we have, no matter what you get that runs on gas, it will need to be taken care of with kid gloves. _________________ Big Fish call for Big Chances!!! |

I have an old Ardisan 8", I use only 93 octane for the mix and drain it at the end of the year. Clean the cylinder and carb with choke cleaner at the beginning of the season, scrub the plug and she's ready to go. I like using Star-tron for stabilizer, I had so-so luck with Sta-Bil. I've been using Star-tron for a few years in all my 2-stroke equipment and never had much of a problem.
That goes with saying that I haven't gotten it out this year yet. Usually wait till the ice is around 10" before I bother, all else is hand augerable. Most years I wait till midway through the season before busting it out, and it runs better and better ever time I take it out after that. By March it runs like a bandit, right before it gets stashed. _________________ "Fish now, answer questions later." |

I have seen the races before, but anybody that has drilled a hole in ice knows that the blade is the horse in the race not the motor, or operator. So if one of the two has dull blades the outcome can be swayed. I have seen guys with blades so bad, even with a gas auger, they couldnt even drill one hole by the time we hand augered six!! _________________ Big Fish call for Big Chances!!! |
