fished the bend from shore by harbor park in Middletown where there's still some open water for a couple hours this evening because the weather wasn't too bad and the wind had died down, didn't really seem to get any bites, and as usual got snagged up a few times Mad

as far as bait goes I was casting out some dead emerald lake shiners which the catfish and stripers around there usually love to inhale in the summertime! maybe its still a bit too cold out for the fish Confused

I noticed the current was moving very fast as well.

All in all it was at least nice to get out and wet a line for a bit! Smile

Stripers don't really want to work hard this time of year so a fast current isn't where they'd want to be. I put in a little time yesterday also for stripers before it started raining pretty good so I bailed.

Better off waiting for mid April to may, that's when the herring and alewives come to the river coves to spawn. Larger bass are migrating up from the Carolina's and Virginia so when they make it to ct they rush the river and hammer those bait fish that are spawning. Live hering is amazing bait when the bass are in the river. Striper candy

Tough to find stripers in the CT River in winter. Like the Thames and Housie, they're in there, but you've got a lot more river, and they are likely to be much higher up. Can't wait 'til early spring, and open water pike and then the striper runs!

head south down Main St. turn left at ABC Pizza, follow that street till it ends. Take a right or left and you'll be in a good stretch of water. Laughing

But like you said, the current will deffinatly be a factor, also in spring that entire area gets hit hard.

As Lunkerbass said, come to the Housy! The Housatonic has been showing more striper action this fall and winter than the CTR.

Only bass you'll get now are schoolies that are to small to make the migration withe the mature bass.

Use of herring of any type dead or alive is BANNED !!
And trust me, there are keepers there all winter.

you can use alt sea herring not river herring and there is a lot of the sea herring in the lower housy now

True Striper, I was talking about river herring. The "type" was ment for the "dead or alive" part.
