Went to Burr pond for some jigging this morning. Really cold out there.....jigged up a couple sunfish in an hour and a half and left. Also had something snap my 2# test. I'm thinking it was a pickeral. There were a bunch of small ones laying out frozen on the ice. Apparently someone doesn't like them. About 9" of ice. _________________ PB LMB: 4lb 13oz

A guy on tyler lake the other time i went told me theres a bird i think he said a red tail hawk or something more rare/unseen in ct that is there every year so he asks fisherman to take a small pickerel and throw it on the ice for the bird when it comes by. They wanna keep him there so he asks for that little favor and he said there are tons of pickerel in tyler lake so its helping the sunfish population in a way. Im guessing thats what they wre doing on burr. _________________ YouTube Channel: NorthEastFisherman |

You can rationalize it all that you want, but ice fishermen who throw chain pickerel onto the ice and leave them are just being wasteful. The worst example of this that I've seen was at West Hill Pond. I suspect that the trout and kokanee salmon fishermen there think they're helping their preferred species to thrive. I think that they're idiots.
Wow! A "there" "they're" "their" sentence! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hi Phil,
I'm with you on this !
Even though I am a dedicated Kokanee fisherman -> I do not throw any fish anywhere and left up on the ice to die !
I will keep a good size Pickerel or legal size Pike to eat as they are excellent sweet white meat fish !
I don't think though that it's right that you generalize that all Trout or Kokanee fishermen are ...idiots !
Now if you where to say that to any Trout and Salmon fishermen up in Maine or NH (That's their bread and butter fisheries) then you'd be in for a .... WAR
They "HATE !" and I do mean "HATE !" ...Pickerel and especially PIKE in their waters which are not indigenous to their waters and where introduced illegaly there.
Pike are so much HATED, that Maine and NH fishery biologist tell fishermen to Catch and Kill all Pike -> in fact they are proposing a Bounty for them + No size or creel limit !
As the Maine fellows say -> Coyote and Egale food
The big problem is the "bucket biologists" who will salt waters with non-indigenous fish which can upset or destroy a thriving fishery !
Now that's being idiots
I say -> Let the fishery biologists make the decision as to what fish should be where ! -> They have a professional understanding of what fish are best suited for particular waters !
Pike are not indigenous to CT. -> Leave them strictly in the waters that have been choosen by DEEP fishery biologist
As far as being wasteful ---> 2 years ago there was a situation on the Farmington River where someone (or ones) caught and left dozens and dozens of pan fish on the ice.
DEEP tried, but never found out who did that !
Best regards,
SeaDog1

Yeah i agree with the being wasteful stuff. Plus if you do leave the fish out on the ice it ruins the birds eating schedule. The bird learns that humans give food and follows and wait for food and when it doesnt get any it starves. Thats why you should let it be and have it find its own food. But if the guy wants to take a few fish from me and feed "his" pet thats fine. I definitaly wouldnt do that to a trout salmon walleye any of those fish. I feel bad even doing that to minnows!! _________________ YouTube Channel: NorthEastFisherman |

Gee Seadog I thought the standing order in Maine was all warm water fish must die. And way does it seem trout guys are the least tolerant of multi-species sharing a waterbody . And let be tick off a whole bunch of people, the warm water fish thrive on their own. If it wasn't for fishery welfare most places wouldn't even have trout in them. |

All-trout fishermen can be tough picky people.
I've also seen plenty of those bass fishermen whine and complain so much about pickerel. |
