seadog actually i never got raked on ice shanty beside the topic which was enjoying my young years but i do not consider that getting raked... and well ice shanty it is easier to post pictures so you guys always want pics and never believe me if i fish or not well watever idc i would never lie about ice reports Good bye.

Whoa there youngster !

You didn't get raked on IS Question -> Should I repeat what they told you "NOT TO SAY !"
No! -> You got raked and told to grow up yet also enjoy your youth, and I have to agree with them Exclamation

Arrow Now ! A lot of guys here on CTFT post pics but don't insist on it.

On IS and Ctfisherman -> They'll tell you "No Pics then It's a Lie Exclamation " -> and don't even tell me that that's not true because it is, and said many times over and over again !

Here on CTFT, the members are very good sportsmen, and will ... "take you at your word" ... and not ask you to produce photo or video evidence.
Isn't that nice !

Hi,

Have you read any of my posted short ice reports ?
I live in Winsted (you know the NW Corner) and can get to many waters such as West Hill, Highland, Burr, Park, Hogback, Colebrook, and Winchester within a15-20 minute drive.
That means I have 1st hand knowledge of what ice conditions are long before you do !

All the waters I have reported on are those that I have driven to and physically been on and have spudded to check ice thickness Exclamation

Some ice is visually easy to see as un-reliable.

Now when you can drive to all these waters, on a regular basis, and give 1st hand on site ice reports, "as I do", ... and not second-hand reports from other people who tell you ..... Then and only then will your ice reports be recognized as valid !

As I said -> I made that mistake once and will never do that again !
I will never pass on Second-hand ice reports to anyone no matter who tells me or how trustworthy I may belive their observations are Exclamation No-No-No

A few of us on here have the luxury of not having constraints on our time or ability to get to our favorite fishing holes -> I'm retired so I can go fishing anywhere I want 7 days a week - day or night - and as many hours as I chose ..... So cabin fever is a malady I do not suffer from ever or the jiggy "I have to get out and walk on hard-water" shakes as you do !

PS: I would be happy to check, 1st hand, the ice on any of the above listed waters, I mentioned, .... for you ! -> Let me know ! Razz

Have a nice day ! Very Happy

i live in Berlin. the ice has been unsafe in every visible body of water here until maybe yesterday or today? some smaller bodies of water are LOOKING safer. I will take a ride over to Silver Lake in the next couple of days. Silver Lake has a lot of bass, some big ones too. They also stocked channel cats in there, and local fisherman have been catching them successfully. I don't know anything about catching them through the ice in this part of the country though i am aware people target them through the ice in the midwest.

Oh "Newbie",

Read my "Latest short ice report" post from last Sunday -> Jan. 20th.

I was there and spudded the ice in 4 places to 40 yards outwards from the boat ramp-> 6 inches tops -> 7 inches if your using a elastic measuring tape ! Laughing
Plus Park and Burr -> each 6 inches tops !

Thank you Jim for your own 1st hand Central Ct. ice report Exclamation

"Newbie" -> Your Secondhand ice reports and predictions are WORTHLESS Exclamation
9-10 inches of ice at Winchester last Sunday ? -> What a pile of .......

....your putting out Exclamation

Oh! ....And your name "Newbie" fits you very well -> You'll have to hold on to that for a long ... looooong time yet !

Meh, in my years going to Winchester I've def. seen more ice there then at other nearby lakes, especially near the dam. That area gets very little sun and in the early season that ices up first. The wind, predominently from the north on that lake, pushes water onto the sheet, making it a little thicker (albeit no stronger). I've driven past Highland seeing open water in the middle of first bay and drilled 6 inches at Winny. I never have much luck there except small perch/pike in the winter and skagged motors in the summer.

As for jimbo, run med/large shiners on tip ups about a foot off the bottom for LMB. At Silver, you'll catch just as many pickerel as bass, but you'll get flags.

Umm just saying i live in the southwest area of ct (newtown to be exact) and i was at winchester last week and there was anywhere from 7-12 inches of ice where i was at.. and that was at the middle -end of the lake near the stumps. There was even enough for quads to be on there doing donuts. This "newb" was right, i've fished about 10 times on ice this year and my first trip was on december 27th i think and it was on 4inches of ice. Theres no need for you guys to be fighting on here, its all for fun not for trash talk and bragging. The ice is perfectly fine if you know where to look and how to get on. That one week of temps in the 40's didnt do anything besides melt the crap snow and take a foot or two of the edges which is still fishable if you use a plank. So both of you quit fighting before someone like a moderator see's this and bans you or remove this thread. Im sure the man hosting this event doesnt want any of this on his thread, its about a silver lake derby not who has been fishing for longer. If you guys need to keep argueing then do this over PM's because this is extremely unnessecary.

Hi NEF,

Thanks for your input.
Wish you had posted your 1st hand on site ice report before all this happened.

Fact is, as we all know, ice does not forn uniformly anywhere!
6 inches here -> 8 inches to the right -> 2 inches to the left.
There's no constant as to how the ice forms in any body of water.

I was there on Winchester also last Sunday and spudded the ice 4x from the ramp out to 40 yards and measured only 6 inches of ice.

You said you found 7-12 inches out in the stump field last Sunday-> that's a wide gap of inches but is very possibly very true and I would not dispute someone giving 1st Hand on site ice info.

Again -> Wish you had posted your 1st hand observations earlier!
Me -> I will NOT pass down to anyone any Secondhand ice info EVER !
I will only pass on ice info that I personally have checked/measured and posted about the same day !
All my ice posts reflect exactly that.

Stay warm - Have Fun

Hey is that the Berlin Irving gas station in the background of your pic? I used to live in Berlin and I worked at that D&D overnight many moons ago. I'm always in the area because my sister still lives there, so PM me if your going out (except Silver Lake, I usually eat whatever trout or perch I catch and that place is still very polluted). Anyway, good luck!

hehehe... bowhunter nailed it. i needed a well lit area for the right shot. yeah Silver Lake is SUPER polluted. No one should ever eat anything out of there EVER! The ponds on Amtrack property have some of the best crappie ice fishing in the state, just throwing that out there. From the small ones (old brickyard lane, Berlin Steel) to the larger ones (visible from rt. 9) Like one hole EVERY waxworm. Im more of a crappie for dinner than a crappie for sport guy, however, and I'm not comfortable eating fish out of those bodies of water. That whole property reeks of decaying industry.

Those little ponds next to amtrack rails and route 9 are one of the best ice fishing spots I used to go to, went there for many years until state put up No fishing/No trespassing signs next to each one on route 9. I guess they didn't like people parking on the side of the freeway, and that ruined it for me and others.

The First small pond next to the ramp joining route 9, from Burger King side had the nicest and cleanest fish, we used to pull out 17"+ bass each time we went there, biggest I caught was 21 inch. The "no fishing" signs are gone next to that one, so I'm going tomorrow and fish it, hope police wont rein on my parade.
