Buddy had limited time today so we decided to jig at Black Rock Pond. When we arrived around 9am, it looked like people had already gone out on the ice. To be safe, I carefully put pressure with my foot on the ice near the shore. That was fine. Then we drilled a hole near shore and found 4 inches of ice.

We kept on drilling holes as we jigged, starting from near the marshy coves and up towards the dam near Route 6. We didn't use a fishfinder but could tell from how much line was down we were jigging in depths ranging from 4 to 8 feet. Ice thickness in most areas was 5 to 6 inches with 2 inches of white on top of 3 or 4 inches of black.

I stuck with a pearl Jigging Shad Rap WSR-3 while buddy played around with a chrome blue Jigging Rap W-2 and gold Kastmaster.

Between the 2 of us, I was the only one to have a hit which was a 6" yellow perch that I landed. Buddy never had anything rob him while using mealies on his Kastmaster.

Before leaving, buddy decided to get a tiny pink jigging lure and rig it with a mealie but no hits on that either.

Hit the road around 12:15pm.

Getting anything out of there without a fish finder is pure luck. BTW it seems gold/orange is usually the most productive there.

The color on the Rapala Jigging Rap called Chrome Blue was catching a lot of trout for me back on a good evening bite of January 2011. I wasn't using any mealies or spikes.

Your reports always seem to be, "I caught fish and my buddy didn't." Laughing

Tell him to try smaller jigs and to s-l-o-w down. And, personally, I prefer waxies to mealies. Wink

I seem to pick up the tactics and techniques better than him. I seem to be better at studying the area of certain places better than him. He has trouble getting the hang of it and is slow. I gotta even talk him into trying something else that's working for me.

Hasn't been the same with him for the past 1 or 2 years vs the good times we had. He's been going downhill. I'm looking into spending the time with other people from this site.

He's always been a disorganized person in so many different ways and has a bad attention span, which has been getting worse. Lots of times I have to tell him that one of his flags went up otherwise he wouldn't have known cause he's not paying close attention. He has history of falling asleep while sitting down while jigging.

Last year when we went to Lake Kenosia for crappie fun, I was sticking with a technique that always works for me with a Rapala Original Floater. He was too busy worrying about live shiners on one rod when he could of been hitting them like me on another rod instead of having live shiners in the water. He wouldn't listen.

So much more.

I'm either stuck with him or don't get out to different places if I don't find new people around my area who are willing to pick me up.

It's even tough being in the car with him while he's driving.

you really ripped into your buddy hard.....if he likes the kastmaster and mealies he might wanna try a simple upgrade ---> sweedish pimple with waxies or spikes. Maybe he needs a spring bobber. I've done pretty well on it, but usually fish soft plastics now. You better get him on some fish or he's gonna stop driving you all over.

I try to get him on the fish with what's working for me but he hardly ever listens unless it takes me plenty of times to show him

Wow man. Your using someone so they can drive you to go fishing. Than you degrade him and then even degrade him to other people on some crappy website because he doesn't pay attention to his tip ups. Brutal man. Brutal.
