Hi Phil,

The reason for cutting a Sabiki rig in half to fish for smelt is so as not to have to deal with a long rig.
Trying to manage a long Sabiki rig with 6 hooks thru the ice is a real pain.
Shorter rig allows you to get back down faster to where the smelt are and catch more faster !
Besides -> With 2 rods rigged with 3 hooks each and " all hooks baited" you have doubled your chances to catch more smelt !
That makes more sense then fiddling with one long cumbersome 6 hook rig with only 3 hooks allowed to be baited !

That's the practical fisherman's reasoning -> Not the lawyers reasoning !

The rules you stated above are all true -> But don't tell anyone not to cut their Sabiki's in half -> That's a personal choice as well as what I learned from many other smelt fishermen with much longer experience then I !

Fishermen (as long as they stay within the rules) will alter their tackle to suit their particular needs and abilities as well as the fish they are targeting Exclamation

Now ...Is that clear enough -> Practical is the key word here ! Laughing

SeaDog1 Mr. Green

I hate arguing with you, Stephen, and don't intend to bust your balls about this. I just wanted to clarify that Connecticut fishermen don't have to cut up their Sabiki rigs "to stay in compliance with the 3 hook rule and regs", because there is no such rule and no such regs. Is that clear enough?

That said, I've also read elsewhere that it's more practical to fish a Sabiki rig with only three hooks because of the high potential for tangling six. I have no experience with smelt fishing, so I'll definitely take your advice on this. But wouldn't it be fun to get a sextuple? Shocked Have you ever pulled up more than two at a time through a hole in the ice?

Hi Phil,

Ease off a bit will you-> You read off those rules and regs. as if they're the 10 Commandments.

When I said of complying with the 3 hook rule -> it was in reference to 3 baited hooks only -> Guess I should have been a bit more clear on that point.

Any way its a stupid rule -> Why fish with 3 baited hooks and none on any other ones on same rig ! -> Really now .....which hook will a fish go for first -> Of Course The Baited Ones Shocked

I have never use a full 6 hook rig Sabiki simply because it's too long and you are unable to pull the whole thing out of a hole at one time.
A 3 hook rig comes out nice and easy. + no tangles.

Smelt fishing is best done at night -> Unfortunately Colebrook and Hogback (having the only smelt populations in Ct.) are closed at sunset and no night fishing is allowed.

Massachusetts where I go now, does allow night fishing for smelt.
Onota Lake, Greenville, and Littleville all have good populations.
All 3 are easy to get on and off and no climbing like the "Goat Path" !

Oh ! ...At night the smelt fisherman will have their coleman lanterns lit which attracts the smelt closer to the surface then at the bottom where they hang out mostly.
Your still going to have to fish fairly deep 20 ft or more for smelt.

Only time smelt are shallower is when they run up creeks and streams to spawn.
In the Mid-West they are allowed to use dip nets to catch them -> Not allowed in Mass. and Ct.

Smelt are super eating Tempura style and also as bait (usually dead).
Most I eat, but I do freeze some for spring trout fishing.
The scent of smelt to trout is like Bacon to us ! Laughing

There's a group of guys (9-12) I smelt fish with (from Mass. and Ct.) and we usually get together 3-4 times during the season. (last season was a bust)
We'll sit in a big circle with 2 holes per man with lights and have a great time !
The smell of all that bait (spikes) and lights attracts the smelts and they'll stay under us all night !
Lots of Fun and plenty of Joking amongst old farts like me ! Very Happy

Hope this info helps,

another suggestion for smelt at Colebrook (not mine) is to avoid where sunlight is hitting the ice. the extensive article i have for smelt there is to fish from 6am to 930 am.

Hi,

Yeah! ... Funny how daylight will send the smelt deep, yet a lantern at night will attract them to come up !
