I took a trip up there today and was suprised to see a group of 3 and a spot where another group were fishing on Bigelow. Stopped at the boat launch walked out. Alittle spongie on the edge but was surprised to see about 5-6 inches of white and black ice. Went up to Mashapaug and there were tracks heading out of the boat launch. 5 vehicals in the parking lot. Talked to 1 guy heading out for Walleye, he was a 300 pound fella, who didnt seem scared of thin ice. He said they have been fishing there for the last couple of weeks. He said before the snow it was a good 6". Also told me a report of a 20# Walleye was cought lastweekend there...Also, the Bait shop on 190, across from the State Hwy Garage is open. Also found JT's Fly Shop at the intersection of route 190 and 89. Bait and Tackle. Open everyday...good to know that. Also Morey pond looks to be safe too...Spongie on the edge but looks solid.

a 20lb walleye blows away the state record if I'm correct.
I highly doubt it was more than a story

That sounds more like a fairy tale than a report to me. Rolling Eyes The Connecticut record is only 14-1/2 pounds. Or did you mean inches, instead of pounds? Laughing

The walleye record is one of the oldest in the book. I doubt it will ever be broken, unless there's one lurking in the Saugy Res.

I believe Mashapaug is a WMA lake. Would I be surprised if there were a 20lber lurking in the depths? No. Big fish get big for a reason. It must be fun ice fishing on Bigelow, it's not a very big pond, if solid enough you could walk the whole thing. It must look awesome there with the snow in the woods.

I would be extremely surprised. The DEEP began stocking Mashapaug Pond with walleye in 2001. It takes five to six years for a stocked walleye fry to reach one pound. And in sub-optimal conditions for walleye like we have in Connecticut waters, it probably takes even longer. A 20 pounder? Not a chance.

There definitely are walleye in mash, i caught a few small ones this past season and i believe i saw a pic of a 11 or 12 pound eye from there. I also know of a guy from other forums i post on that caught a 12lb eye from beach pond in CT, sadly he kept it from the looks of the pics

Im sure the DEP didnt lie about it in the Angler's Guide, and the People that have been fishing there at night, arent doing just because. I'm just amazed that some people think they know it all..... Rolling Eyes
