Fished Savin Lake and Day Pond today. Few groups of guys fishing Savin, slow pick of bass, pickerel, and perch. We got a pickerel on a shiner and I jigged up a little yellow perch on a Rapala Jiggin Rap that I'm still trying to figure out. Didn't stay there long since the good spots were taken and the ice was on the sketchy side as you headed further out. Moved to Day Pond to get away from the crowds and maybe find some trout. 2-3 inches of white over 2-3 inches of clear ice. Shiners on tip ups got us a pickerel and a nice crappie, and jigging got another crappie and a sunfish. Hoping to try somewhere else tomorrow to find some more fish.

Did you rig the Jigging Rap with a spike or mousie?

All these years I've been ice fishing with the Jigging Rap I have never had to rig it with live bait and still get great action. Sometimes there's a special pattern they like, which I have the hang of.

put spikes on the ends but the perch went after the treble anyway

i throw spikes on the treble, jig up once quick and right back down to the original spot quick and wait 5-10 seconds and repeat. I use a small loop not on the rapala I learned on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwc-Bb9_-Y0

Works on aggressive fish. Caught 5 perch and 2 pickeral in 3 hours at Tyler this week using this method. Scary catching picks on 2lb test, and glad to still have my rap.

Went again this morning to another nearby pond. Got a nice yellow perch right away on a shiner, then it was slow until my buddy got a nice largemouth and a fat pickerel along with another perch jigging. I broke off a nice fish on a tip up - still a rookie at this. Nothing after 9 or 10.

The pattern I have is give it a quick jerk up and let it pause for 3 to 6 seconds before giving it another quick jerk up. Do that jerk and pause 3 or 4 times. On the 3rd or 4th pause, give it a quick 3 twitches up as if it's dancing. Pause for 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat those steps with some occasional "dancing". The "dancing" can attract them as if it's a bait in distress.

What you should also do about depth is cover a variety in different holes.

While I was at Dog Pond jigging up crappie, I'd let it sink all the way to the bottom and then 1 crank up. I saw I was on weeds so I reeled it back up to get the weeds off and then timed the sinking vs how long it took to get to the bottom the other time. I'd also give it an occasional half or full crank up if nothing is happening for a while closer to the bottom. Sometimes you need to be right in front of the fish's face.
