I never fished any of the ct river coves. I was wondering how soon they might freeze up and what species people usually target there. Thanks _________________ PB LMB: 4lb 13oz

They usually freeze by the end of January ,yet again depends on the temps.Fish species targeted are:yellow perch, crappie, bass, pike, pickerel and catfish.I might have missed some but i am sure someone will correct me.Good luck, have fun and stay SAFE. |

Try to find the small protected coves or marinas I know of a marina that is starting to freeze up and the great thing about marinas you can ice fish on 1inch of ice
What i mean is set tip ups off the dock and jig off the dock can usually produce big pike |

The coves on the river... especially those south of Hartford are impacted by TIDES... BE CAREFUL...or wait til later, when you know you have lots of good ice...
you willl see ya hoos standing on the edges, with open water, you are askin to get dragged out on an iceberg like Rudolf...or worse. |

Be Careful !!! |

Ive seen video of guys on white oaks using their Jet sleds and ropes as boats to get people and gear off the ice because that happened while they were on the ice, and these were seasoned icefisherman who are aware of these kind of effects the tides and water coming downstream can have, and they still got trapped in a matter of minutes!!!! |

I laughed my ass off year before last when I swung by Wethersfield and watched a couple of guys trying to figure out how to get back to land with a tide coming in. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

It sounds like you could use a stable kayak for this. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

LOLOLOL Never thought to pack a kayak ice fishing... and Yes... PECO... that joke was pointed at you!! we all know you love that kayak of yours... my yak sits idel.t...
Anyway... once we get SOLID ice...way more than the 2-4 we got now, the coves are ok and safer to fish. my suggestion, wait a week or so, if it stays this cold, ..then head out. Dead mean dont fry fish. |

Hey, if I head out onto the river, I just might replace my Jet Sled with my old eight foot Pelican kayak. You never know. . . . _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

These conditions are especially likely when there has been heavy rain or snow melt north of us, there could be ALOT of water coming down from up north and meet with a hightide force pushing against it, the water has nowhere to go but outward! Be Careful, p.s. a yak may allow you to fish all kinds of areas you might not be able to get to -Dan |
