SeaDog and others,

What would be the "safest", or most "reliable", places in Litchfield County this weekend?

Even though temps are supposed to get very cold, I'm not sure if most bigger lakes would be safe enough, or reliable.

Reliable places I was thinking about would be smaller lakes such as Park, West Side, Little Bantam, Tyler, and Dog.

I've been on Dog since Saturday. There was 3.5" then, but probably pushing close to 5 now. Everyone and their mom was out there on Monday. It was so crowded I was forced into a spot I never fished before, but it turned out well. I've put 7 hours total over 3 days and the panfish are hitting good on jigs. Landed 21 so far, 15 of them crappies. Tried tipups on one of my trips to no avail, and haven't seen the guys get many flags while I was out. But the big guys gotta get hungry sometime....Any word on Bantam, Tyler, or Winchester?

whoooaaaa dude, that was my report, and if I were you, I wouldnt go around telling ANYBODY any ice is safe, how do you know its safe? how do I KNOW it is safe? There is no such thing as safe ice, icefishing has very real inherent risks, if you havent been there personally dont tell people that, some of the ice I was fishing on was less than 3 inches thick, but that is my responsibility, not yours! -Dan Wink

Winchester has ice people are fishing it probably 3-5in.
Park is being fished as well ive heard 4-5 and 2 near the dam.
Dog i have no clue but from last years reports i heard people fished it early.
Tyler has been fished metalfish25 said that it gets to 1'' closer to the middle so stay near shore.
Mt tom is wide open. Some ice is forming.
Bantam has 1-2 in not fishable unless youre crazy.
Squantz still open water. Not too sure about far up across the boat launch.
Margerie has some ice that MAY be walkable. I wouldnt try it though.
Candlewood Danbury Cove is skim 1-2in. Not Fishable.
Smaller ponds and lakes in danbury 1-2'' (unless theyre shallow).
Some ponds in newtown where i live are locked up and i may try to get on one tomorrow if my dad gets off work when schools over.
McDonough is 50% locked up with snow/skim ice 1'' and the ice is in the middle.

Search for a shallow (14ft Max Probably) lake or pond thats small in size and it will probably be locked up but be careful and stay near shore.

I honestly have no clue but i hear it in reports of regular fishing so i assumed it could be. Plus it was right there so i took a look. Make sure if it is or isnt before you decide to fish it or not.

I know what that feeling is like. I just wish Great Hollow Lake would stay open til the last day of the season and you could ice fish it, esp if the weather is cold enough.

Hey I'm not trying to be a jerk, Icefishnewbie, I just want to make it clear that its still early and the ice is very unpredictable, and I take risks going onto ice that may not exactly be ''safe'', but I always do it with another very experienced icefisherman who has been through the ice and helped people get out too. To be honest, if you guys wait until the weekend it will be much safer and you will have more options too! -Dan Cool
