Fishing buddy gave me a call this afternoon telling me he spotted skim ice!
He was driving on Route 25 in Monroe and saw skim ice on the West Pequonnock Reservoir.
This next warm spell is only supposed to last for 3 or 4 days before it gets cold again. Let's hope for ice before Christmas! |

i am just messing with you guys.
Though I see a lot of ponds with ice
I think under water springs have more effect on ice then the depth (when it comes to ponds and small lakes)

I agree with the underwater springs.
Back when we had a cold winter that froze many lakes and ponds solid, buddy and I checked out one of the small ponds at the golf course I fish. Ice was 4 1/2" thick. We drilled a few holes but had water coming up out of the holes. No water flows through the pond so we expected it to be underground springs doing it. |

Warm spell is supposed to last for 3 or 4 days before getting cold again.
I looked at The Weather Channel's December through February outlook on the jetstream pattern and ridges. From the way things have been going since Sandy, I'd say Dec through Jan is gonna be average temps with a few quick warm spells. Precipitation will be mostly rain and mix for the shoreline, low valleys, and areas no more than 10 miles inland. Better chance of snow for areas from the Candlewood Valley north.
February is when things get much colder when we see a dip in the jetstream and there might be a good chance for a heavy Noreaster.
Once March rolls around we will start seeing temps warming up rapidly with lots of rain.
That low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska has a lot to do with the pattern. Once it starts to move inland towards the northern Rockies, which will take a while, that will mean big dip in the jetstream for the Eastern US with some high pressure building in, such as a Greenland Block. |

hmm...
Well, I "guess" that's good....lol - as long as I can get out on the ice this year, that'll be great! I also have to consider the derby I want to coordinate as well...I want it to be on Candlewood, but not sure if there'll be enough ice.

the longer the warm weather last the happier ill be
but since its bound to get cold at some point once it gets cold it would be nice for it to stay JUST cold enough to keep the water freezing and the ice safe,
Best wishes for ice - most cloudy days, no wind, no rain, very little snow
if it does snow it should be very light and only after the lake or pond has frozen
a couple years back we had black ice
above that was refroze water from the light rain we had
above that was cloudy frozen slush and then snow on that!
Give me some clear solid ice with a thin layer of snow just to hide the clear ice
I feel weird walking on clear ice looking down to the dark depths of a lake
Who knows when swamp thing is going to punch a hole in the ice and take me under
case close i rest my case

it could be from the pressure of heavy snow on the ice
or just in general the pressure of ice on the water especially places that may have been drawn down

Then I guess it was the pressure of buddy and me standing on the ice. We had a number of holes right near each other too. There wasn't any snow covering the ice. Combination of black and white ice with some slush.
The pond is a farm pond that's now part of a golf course. |

FYI:
Snow or Ice is lighter then water so it "floats" on the water.
Yeah! An iceberg is heavy and 90% will be below the water ... But it still floats ...... and water is incompressible.
So ice/snow can not cause pressure on water ... only displacement !
That's what is happening ...... its a simple matter of physics.
So once you drill a hole -> the water comes up to replace the space of the ice you drilled out.
If water is still coming out of the hole -> Call the Water Dept. you drilled into a water main !  ....
