I headed off South Pine Creek beach (Fairfield) in my kayak Monday morning prepared to do some tube-and-worm trolling. As I paddled out to the reef I saw birds working the surface out by the navigational marker. I sprinted out to find a school of bass breaking the surface all around me. Using a couple swimming lures (Rapala, Bomber) I trolled and cast for a few hours following the birds which would disappear occassionally. I brought 6 stripers (18-22") into the yak and another couple alongside spat the hook (barbless) and also had a few other hookups and fights. Great day on the water and hope to squeeze in a few more before the fish disappear.
And for anyone considering going out on the water in a yak, ensure you've got adequate exposure protection (e.g. a drysuit), a PFD, and a waterproof VHF. It's getting cold out there.

Amen, Andy. I'm tired of reading about drowning kayakers. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |
