Hate to see something like this happen, but common man! Hurricane or not, wear the PFDs and this time of year, think about investing in a dry suit. You'll spend a lot of money, but it's that or put the yak in the garage for the winter. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

New to the forum. Do we respond to idiotic posts, or just ignore them? |

After 10/1. Once that water drops down below 50 though, even a PDF is not going to always save you. Some may be unable to function immediately upon hitting the water. More individuals will have have a limited window to get themselves out of the water before hypothermia sets in to a degree where you are unable to function. Once that water temp drops, get the dry suit, or at least have a dry bag with additional warm clothing. The abilities to get out of the water AND get dry and warm fast are critical. I've taken a dunk or two in sub 50 water, and it will definately shrink your sack _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

Here's the special regulation for manually propelled vessels (i.e., canoes and kayaks):
Quote: | Sec. 15-121-A17. Personal flotation devices for manually propelled vessels.
During the period from October first through May thirty-first all persons aboard a manually propelled vessel shall wear a Type I, II, III, V or V Hybrid United States Coast Guard approved personal flotation device of appropriate size and in serviceable condition. Except as provided in subsection (b) of section 15-121-A13 of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, no operator, owner or user of said manually propelled vessel shall allow any person to be aboard who is not wearing such a device. |
I met a guy in Hamburg Cove who told me that he was given a written warning by an EnCon officer when he paddled back to shore without his PFD. The PFD was in his canoe, but he wasn't wearing it. That was the first time I heard about the special regulation. Ironically, the guy also told me that he fell into the water from his canoe earlier that year and had to be rescued by a couple of guys on a bass boat. Shortly after he told me about that, a bass boat pulled into the cove and one of the guys on it yelled, "Hey, six pack! Where's our six pack? If you don't give us our six pack, we won't pull you out of the water, next time!" _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |
