|
|
Is it common for jumbo shrimp to be around here or is it yet another warm weather freak thing? Walking the beach in Fairfield and saw something out of the corner of my eye in the sand and low and behold there is about a 4 1/2" shrimp squirming there about 20' from shore. I grabbed it, pulled out a long hook used for rigging sluggos and tossed it out there. 10 minutes later my line ripped off my reel of my baitrunner. Either I had a nick in my line or it rubbed me on some oysters as it broke me off before the leader with 20 lb Ande line. I hadnt brought bait with me, just plugs and that was the only bite before it started lightning so I called it quits. Been getting some smaller schoolies and Taylors and this was the first bigger fish in awhile so I am pretty bummed, Had to be a 30 lber or there abouts or a shark of some kind. definitely not a blue! _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

They grow really fast after they spit the hook or break off. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Mantis shrimp, the fish we took earlier in the week were full of them.
Crawl a bucktail with a split pork rind on the bottom. Best substitute. _________________ Trust me. Use waxworms ! |

50 lb leader but 20 lb mono. I didnt touch the mantis with mh fingers, it looked to freaky. I carefully just pinned it down with my pliers and stuck the the long sluggo hook through it. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

You guys are all out of control.
A grass shrimp is about an inch long.
The mantis in the video is a tropical species, different than the local species.
It was positively a MANTIS SHRIMP fishfinder found. They are VERY common and every fall my bass have them in their bellies.
There has to be 100 species or more of them throughout the world. Some are clubbers, some are spearers depending on what they prey upon as food. Yes they can break glass. Yes they can split your thumb. Yes Fishfinder found 1 on the beach.
The link shows our local species or very similar one.

That in that pic is absolutely what I saw, grey and almost see through in areas. Glad I was a little freaked out at it or I guess it could have kicked my arse huh? _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....
