I was surprised to learn that NWDarkcloud (aka Bob) had never fished Keeney Cove before, so he, TurtleKiss (aka Kira) and I hit it on Wednesday. I got there before they and was on the water in The Other Woman just after 8:00 am. When I launched in the middle cove, there were already several fishermen with lines in the water off of Point Road. I never checked the tide table, but from the flow of the water through the culvert under the road, low tide was approaching. It was a cool, foggy morning:
As you can see from the surface of the water, there was little to no wind. The water temperature was 53 degrees when I launched and peaked at 57 degrees around noon. Bob and Kira finally showed up and put The Way More Better into the water at 8:35 am:
At 8:45 am, the sun finally broke through the fog and burned it all away:
When the sun came out, I saw that the water was very murky. I could see down less than a foot. I had stayed near Point Road while I waited for Bob and Kira. I threw a wacky rigged green pumkpin/red flake five inch Senko, a white five inch slow sinking Sebile Magic Swimmer, a white Mepps Musky Killer inline spinnerbait, a white spinnerbait with colorado and willow blades, and a spider jig. I didn't get a single bite or nibble. However, while Bob and Kira were loading their gear onto The Way More Better, I saw a shore fisherman catch a really nice channel catfish with bait on the bottom in the deeper water of the channel of the middle cove. After Bob and Kira launched, they headed straight up to the mouth of the channel leading to the culvert under Route 3. I worked my way up there along the east shore of the middle cove. When I finally reached them, Kira got a hit on a white spinnerbait like mine and boated the first fish, which was a largemouth bass that probably weighed around one pound. I headed into the channel and got to the culvert at 9:30 am:
I drifted my wacky Senko with the slowly outflowing water along the bottom from just inside the culvert and boated my first fish:
Whoo hoo! The 13 inch largemouth bass weighed one pound, one ounce. Over the next 1-1/2 hours, I caught three more largemouth bass, all in the same way. This 12 incher weighed 13 ounces:
And this 12 incher one weighed one pound, one ounce:
But this 16 incher weighed two pounds, five ounces:
The bite in the culvert died for me when the slack low tide hit, so I decided to leave the cold shade of the culvert and pedal around the sunny upper cove:
The depth of the water in most of the upper cove ranged from six inches to 1-1/2 feet. At times, I actually had to paddle The Other Woman, which is a little kinky for me. Although I saw a few swirls from fish in the shallow, murky water, I didn't get even a nibble, so I headed back to the culvert. It wasn't until the tide turned and water began to flow back into the cove at around 2:00 pm that I boated a couple of more fish. This 12 inch, 15 ounce largemouth bass gave me my five fish bag:
It was a small bag, but a full one, nonetheless. And this 12 inch, one pound largemouth bass let me cull the 13 ouncer from the bag :
We ended up getting off of the water at just after 3:00 pm. In addition to my six small keeper largemouth bass, Bob and Kira each caught five of their own. I think that we had a pretty good day, considering that we fished the cove during the slack low tide. Now, if we could only find some northern pike. . . . _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I don't think I've ever caught anything worth bragging about at Keeney (except other people's lures) but it's always fun to try. Got one on a jig, one on a t-rigged black/blue crazy legs chigger craw, and the other 3 with spinnerbaits.
When we got back to the launch, a forensics team was checking out the contents of a bag one of the (way too many) shore anglers landed. Somewhat surprisingly, it contained garbage and not human remains - YAY!
Thanks for the excellent company as always, Bob & Phil. _________________ Kira
