|
|
This past weekend I was at Great Hollow fishing for trout with my daughters. Things were very slow and I didn't see anyone land a fish the whole time we were there. In fact, the fall season has been pretty slow there for me. During that time however I did see a couple of cormorants surface with trout in their mouth and proceed to swallow them down in front of us. Two separate instances, two different birds, in two different locations. I wonder how many stocked fish they actually consume. I have read they don't impact the fish population much, but they sure got more than we did that day! |

All the years I've been fishing at Great Hollow, I always see those pesky birds eating away at the newly stocked trout in the spring and fall. I have also always said that they usually out do us fishermen there, unless you have a good bite going.
I don't know why the fall stocked browns aren't hitting like they should be there. |

Once the state does their fall stocking at Great Hollow the trout are usually active until the lake closes. For some reason they're not hitting like they should be. |

I agree with the slow action there. I'm guessing the temperature swings and rain might have something to do with it. In past years I have done quite well there but this fall the usual spots just aren't producing. I've tried powerbait in 4 colors, trout magnets, spinners, spoon and an assortment of lures like rapalas and yozuri pins minnows and have been shut out every trip. This weekend I think I am dragging the row boat out and trying live minnows. |

Live minnows is a very good idea. When I was at GH with buddy on the canoe, we thought live minnows would have done better than what we were throwing. |
