|
|
I'm not from around here and I've just gotten into fishing the beginning of this year. trouble is, I'm in school, have little time and money. I have this Wednesday night free and a buddy and I are planning on going out to the milford/new haven area.
however, I don't really know where to go/park. nor do we know what we're going for (catching anything would be grounds for success!). we're pretty much newbies and any advice would be appreciated in terms of location, bait/lures, gear, and importantly, etiquette out on piers and such.
I've been down to milford's silver sands with my girlfriend over the summer and saw a large pier that I've heard about?
also we'll be going out around 6pm (high tide is around 7 i think, sunset around 615?). I'd like to stay out until 11 or so, but I'm not sure if that'll work seeing that the tide will be going out.
thanks guys! |

High tide will be around 7:40 on Wednesday. Gulf beach Pier is a decent place and theres plenty of parking there right next to the pier. You really should have a permit if you plan on fishing past dark but they dont usually bust chops there. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

What setup are you planning on bringing? |

honestly, I'm not quite sure what I have. some spin reel on a rod larger than the ones I bring to the pond/lake haha.
usually I'll grab some frozen mackerel and squid and have 2 hooks about 18in apart with a weight on bottom to get some flat fish. but if I go to the Gulf beach pier fishfinder suggested, I'm not too familiar with the area so I'm not sure where I could get bait. (thanks for that spot too!) |

Lure weight, sinker weight, and pound test line have a lot to do with the rod and reel combo.
An 8' 6" St Croix surf rod I have can cast with lures and weights ranging from 1/2 ounce to 2 ounces. Most items over 2 ounces can possibly break the rod. Distance is another factor when it comes to pound test line vs rod strength and action. |

usually I'll throw a 2oz weight and 2 chunks of bait without any problems (rods about that size I believe). do you know of a bait shop around that area? or suggest any type of lure that might be better? |

Bobby J's on 354 New Haven Ave. is right around the corner. Call so you know when they are open as I wish these bait shops held better hours. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

thanks! I checked somewhere online, it read they were open until 6 wednesdays.
if I do make it around that area, at that time of evening and this time of year, what would I likely be shootin for? and more importantly what do they eat |

If you want blues and or stripers and are chunking then mackerel or freh bunker is your best bet. If they dont have fresh bunker then frozen will do but fresh is way better. Bring a bait knife or buy 1 there. If your going to gulf then instead of the pier go way to to left and hit the jetty that leads into the salt pond over at the bridge as thats typically where the bait will be. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

Thanks. I have a few knives I use for bait so I should be okay. Generally how much weight/sized hook could I use for blues/striper |

6.0 or 7.0 is the size hook I use for either. As far as weighg goes that really depends on tide or if uou are in the current. Best to use none at all . Generally about 2 ounces like you said but a strong in or outgoing tide can sometimes drag uou all over the pkace and get you hung up so youl have to up it. If your in the current near where the bridge goinv into the salt pond id sometimes you even need to step up to 5! _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

I must have done much better studying than you. I've always been an honor roll fisherman. You need to get better grades. |

I'd love to see you walk away with a broken 8' 6" while throwing a 3oz tin. I'll still be into the RI stripers while throwing a 1 1/2oz long casting plug and having no problems |
