I was fishing for eels on a private lake I have access to. Water was cool with a layer of mist on top. I was casting about 10 feet out with nightcrawlers, no floats or splitshot. Generally, the eels hit the worms light and hook themselves when they swallow the hooks (no real way to get them in the mouth, even with circle hooks). I had my rods propped up on a lawn chair while I talked with my cousin when I heard a rod move.
There was no tension on the line so I reeled in a bit and set the hook, expecting an eel. I started reeling in what felt like weight and the fish took off. This was on my "beater" set up, a 5 foot Ugly Stick that lives up to its name with ultra light action. The tip had been cut off by a careless slam of the car door and has a poorly welded on replacement tip. A "crunchy" spin casting reel and 6 pound Zebco Outcast mono (I am a big fan of this budget line).
The fish took a lot of runs and I was worried about the line. I hadn't changed it since May and I figured it may be brittle. I set the drag a bit light and let the fish run with it. I had it up to the bank once and it took off when we failed the net attempt. Eventually I managed to get it inside the net. It's amazing what a size 6 hook and a worm can do. Verified weight was 8.6 pounds on a "legit" scale. Fish released. I don't have a photo uploaded yet. I've never caught a carp that big, it was a lot of fun![/img] |
