Got up early this past Sunday, and decided to try Messerschmidt Pond in Essex, based on some older posts I saw a while back. Got there about 6am, a little foggy, overcast and cool, perfect fishing weather, and I was the only one there. (who else would be there at 6am on a sunday morning?) I readied the Pelican and discovered I forgot my camera. Sorry, no photos again, but I will have it next weekend. The lake itself shows perfect habitat, surrounded by woods, numerous coves with large and small lilypads, one or two islands, and an average depth of 6 to 9 feet. The only problem is it is being attacked by millfoil or some other invasive plant, and it is really starting to choke out at least half the lake. Our state has got to start doing something about this, the last three places I've been are nearly choked out completely by the stuff.
Anyway, I started with the black spinner bait as I moved clockwise along the shore, but had no action. Switched to the Ribbets top water frog, after maybe another 15 minutes I got 2 small hits, over the pads, but that was it. Not seeing ANY signs of life in the coves after another dozen casts, I threw the spinnerbait out into the open water off the cove, and finally pulled in a 10'' lmb.
Nothing for another half hour, then picked up a 12'' lmb on a drop shot green lizard off the pads. Worked my way to the dam, and got a 16'' lmb on the spinnerbait, in about 12 fow, near the bottom. Worked my way toward the boat launch, and got another on the lizard, just off another cove. Wind started to pick up just as I got back to where I started, so I decided to pack it in, either the place is fished out, or they're getting choked out, or they just weren't hitting, or they didn't like what I was offering for breakfast... Whatever. Next weekend I'm thinking Williams, Upper Moodus, or Ashland. I'm thinking positive, so I'll bring my camera.
