Haven't posted a report in a while and haven't really gotten a chance to really fish lately so I figured I would post a report. I wanted to fish yesterday but unfortunately didn't have the time, and it rained earlier in the day. Got out on the water around 7:45am and launched at the Rocky Hill Ferry Launch.
For anyone who hasn't been there, it can be crowded at times but it's a beautiful place to launch.
Sometimes during the year they do charge a ridiculous fee of $30, but not right now.
The temperature was in the upper 50's climbing to the lower 60's. I didn't check the water temp right away, but when I was getting off the water at 1:30pm it was 63 degrees. The wind was between 3 and 5 mph all day which was great.
I used two setups today, a heavy setup with my new SPRO BBZ 1 Jointed Slow Sinking Swim Bait (BlueBack Herring Color) and a regular Strike King series square bill crank on my medium baitcaster setup.
This was the first time using the SPRO series type bait. I landed my first Pike with it which turned out to be the biggest of the day for me at 26".
I switched back and forth with setups throughout the day. The rest of the fish were caught on my square bill. My buddy caught a LMB and a nice size Pickerel, around 22"-23".
Throughout the day I boated another Pike that was a bit smaller than the 26", that was probably 3-4" smaller. Although you can't tell from the picture, but this one was really colorful.
2 LMB (shorts less than 12"), my first White Perch of the year (go figure?), and a 20" or so Pickerel. The picture says 21" but I didn't straighten out the fin.
I cruised back to the launch and got back around 1:30pm or so. It felt good to finally get out and spend some time on the water. I enjoy the cool weather much more than the summer weather! _________________ Steve |

Nice, Steve! I'm liking hard swimbaits more and more. I know that I have one of those Spro swimbaits, somewhere. I'm going to have to find it. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hey, Dan, can you launch for free, now, at Wethersfield Cove? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Thanks Phil. Yeah I noticed that the action on it is great. I usually don't spend over $20 on lures but I heard this one had great reviews and its definitely worth it to me...especially for the big fish! _________________ Steve |

Where did you get that Steve, Cabelas? what sizes are there? I love throwing the big stuff, gotta get to a trout stocked lake with lunkers in it, like C'wood or Lakeville and throw them for bass, I just picked up the St.croix swimbait rod made for throwing those big heavy lures, Its a 7'11' Heavy action 1-4oz rated, Bad$*s rod, on clearance for 80$ at CT outfitters! -Dan |

I've been throwing a five inch slow sinking Sebile Magic Swimmer a lot, lately, and love it. I have one that's white and one that's perch patterned. It casts a mile, I can see it from a mile away, it has great action and even small fish will hit it:
And, yes, big fish will hit it, too:

Nice report Steve. I've never launched out of Rocky Hill because of the fee. It looks about the same distance down to the Mattabesset as it is running north from Haddam. I might give it a try in the next few weeks. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

To anyone who has an extra 80 bucks laying around: snap up that last "in stock" JSJ snack size swimbait in the perch pattern. You won't be disappointed. _________________ Kira

Stripedhunter wrote: | What? $80 for a lure, that's insane. | Welcome to the wonderful world of swimbaiting, I'll spend a cool 100$ for a quality, HANDMADE, HAND-PAINTED swimbait! 316 Hardbaits are at least 90$, in fact, because they are handmade it makes them extremely hard to get and the used ones sell for upwards of 200$ on swimbait forums and Ebay -Dan |
