It was! It was steady till the sun came out. The wind picked up and everything went deep. We hadda work at that point. My son picked up a nice largie in a fallen tree with a whacky rig. It was the only largemouth we caught all morning. Everything else were smallmouths!

Don't let them young'ens get under your skin! Us 50+ old farts got alota time under our belts along with experience! We've proved our skills plenty. If ya ask me I think to many youngsters believe what they read in all the fishing magazines. I know I got dozens of them laying around my house! LOL

LOL! - i was thinking about the way back when days! - i got my first rod and reel at a sears on main street in danbury a mtichell 304 (was the creme of the crop MADE IN FRANCE and came with a extra spool and a nice container fro the spare spool and a fiberglass gamefisher rod) all of $15.00 for the pair (paper route money!) My tackle box was a hand me down metal job from my uncle had all kinds of NEAT stuff in it!. Back then we rowed a boat on the croton water shed! WVERYONE had a boat so we fished a bunch of different waters and the fishing WAS SO MUCH FUN! - i had a handful of go to lures jitterbugs - hula poppers - dare devils - (FLAT FISH in all kinds of colors) creme worms with the beads and propellers in natural and black! IT WASN'T till the mid sixties that i got my first RAPALA and i got to trout fish! "it wasn't till i cast one out and bent over to get something in the bait and a big bass hit floating that i thought UMMM i might be on to something here"

We did't have much more LOL a fish finder was rowing up on a spot that looked good and casting to it!

there is much to say for the long way we have come to fishing today! to tell you the truth IT BLOWS my mind! HOWEVER that being said BACK IN THE OLD DAYS WE CAUGHT FISH - AND LOTS OF THEM! Laughing

Haha! My first set-up was a Zebco rod and reel! My first tackle box and lures were ordered from the back of a comic book ad! Paper route money also. My first big bass was while poaching in the Trap Falls Reservoir in Huntington (Shelton) where I landed my first six pounder. Got it to shore and heard a stick crack behind me. Turned to see the Game Warden approaching fast. Grabbed the tackle and fish and ran like hell. That SOB chased me about two miles. (Got Away) Getten tired I dropped the bass in the Far Mill River (Still Alive).

About two weeks later on the front page of the local news paper there is this young kid with his father holding a six pound bass they caught in the river while trout fishing.

The article read young man denied record setting bass. Who ever did the recording back then didn't believe he caught it in a trout stream.

Only me, the kid and his father know the truth. That young man is still probably talking about that to this day! Those were the days. Lakes and rivers never over pressured.

Hi,

Any of you (+50) old farts remember this "Grand Old Master" of fishing ?

I was fortunate to meet him once on a plane flight exactly 44 years ago on my way home on leave from the Navy.
Real gentleman !
Gave me a lot of tips on fishing during the hour we spoke.
They don't find many men like him anymore!

Hi WF,

That's "Gadabout Gaddis" - the Flying Fisherman !

Very 1st to have a TV fishing show on the very 1st TV station in the US out of Schenectady, N.Y. (Was a 20 minute show on Saturday afternoons).

On your picture -> The 2 right ones are "Jitterbugs" -> can't remember what they called the one on the left.

Left "Heddon Crazy Crawler" White "Glow in Dark Jitterbug" Right "Painted Balsa Wood Jitterbug." All from the 50's early 60's. I have boxes of this stuff in my basement. A friends father passed last year and he gave me all his fishing tackle. I'm afraid to use it for fear of losing them. I have a whole box of hand poured rubber worms and spoons and flashers of all sizes.

Hi WF,

NO Exclamation .... I wouldn't use them -> They're collector items and worth $$ and even more if you still have the original boxes they came in.

on the topic of OLD fishing tackle! a few years back i had an older friend who used to do tag sales with his wife! he told me a story about a friend of his!

On a normal saturday he and his wife pulled into a barn & tag sale in NH. his wife was doing her thing while he looked at the old tools! he spotted an old tackle box that was pad locked! and inquired? the lady said it was her uncles and had been in the barn for years he never came back to get it after the war? all his poles and such were taken by the kids but the box was never touched! when asked about it she said he could have it for 5 dollars - HE SAID BULL SHIT i don't even know whats in the damn thing and drove off! - so the story goes he thought about and turned around and said he would take it! she said ok give me 4 dollars! - upon opening the bax a couple of months later -- IT WAS LOADED with old Heddon and Arbogast lures covered with some dust but still in NEW boxes!

estamated value $30,000.00

Bullshit.

Ive been eyeing your posts on here for a while. It took 5lbs to win a 10boat club t there Saturday and I won my club t there sunday with 6 11. There were 4 other fish caught in my club t..... spread out through 8 fisherman.

I worked extremely hard to find my fish including a keeper-less 6 hrs on Friday.

Im just sayin- from now in- Pics or it didnt happen. I mean with all the 15lb bags you get there you should fish the FED and the TBF just for the lillinoah t's. Your talking a GUARANTEED $2000+ a year for two tournaments.

Your doing it wrong. Wink

Hey! I got one of them there crazy crawlers!

They were intorduced in a plastic model and a wooden model back in 1954. I have a wooden one myself. The wooden ones are estimated to be worth 30-45 bucks, and the plastic ones 20-25 bucks.

As for the jitterbugs, the original was made in 1938 out of wood by Fred Arbogast. The original was produced from 1938-1940 out of wood and had two hooks, a front and a rear, and was 2 3/4 inches in length. Valued 60-75 bucks
From 1940-1942, he produced the single hook jitterbug, also out of wood, but only 2 1/8 inches in length. Valued 80-90 bucks. He also produced the "musky jitterbug" which was 4 1/2 inches long, the largest of the jitterbugs. Originally had 2 hooks, discontinued in 1942 and reintroduced in 1947 with 3 hooks. Valued 150-200 bucks
In 1942, the peanut sized jitterbug was also produced, also out of wood. At 2 1/4 inches, it had two hooks. Valued 80-90 bucks
In 1943, he mostly stopped making wooden models and favored plastic. Original plastics, very similar to what we see today, are valued at 5-10 bucks. Except the ones with blue heads, which are somewhat rare, valued at 60-70 bucks.
In 1978, a "jitterbug group" series was introduced featuring natural colors: Redwing, Blackbird, Sparrow, Mouse, and Chipmunk. Valued 20-25 bucks.
All jitterbugs after that, in the interest of what they're worth, 5 bucks or less. Keep your eyes out for originals!!

i have 3 of these jitter bugs and 2 of these others as well along with MANY -MANY MORE!

the 3 that i have that were the BEST EVER are CLEAR PLASTIC with tiny silver metal flakes in the plastic! - i used them up till a couple of years ago BUT then retired them - wanted to hold on to them! - they were my most productive till the sun went down!

the other 2 that i retired were chrome with a line of pink on the belly - those were also great -- i never EVER go out without jitterbugs WHICH i still fish with today! ESPECIALLY BLACK!

and when i go up to maine i use the XXLARGE musky jitterbugs for pike - and i have caught stripers on the XXlarge ones as well it is FUN!

thanks for the history - that was great! Laughing Laughing
