Seriously guys? This is 100% a northern water snake. They are non venomous and not dangerous, although they do have pretty big teeth so you probably shouldn’t try to pick one up unless you are used to handling snakes. I’ve caught and released them many times since I was a kid, never been bitten. They sure do smell bad though – like rotten fish!

God only knows how many of these harmless snakes get killed every year by people freaking out thinking they are copperheads, or more often “water moccasins”. Water moccasins don’t even exist in New England! I stopped some teenagers from killing one this summer at a pond near my house, they were convinced that they were saving the town from some sort of deadly menace…

Jon - You should know that Aris (aka Megaman) is severely ophidiophobic (i.e., afraid of snakes). When we were out on the Mattabesset River, I picked up a water snake by its tail and Aris almost fell out of his kayak. Laughing I never realized that a person could jump out of their seat while sitting in a sit in kayak. Laughing

I looked it up when I got home and that definitely was a northern water snake. You were right about the head shape, that definitely gave it away as non venomous.

It was a big snake though and I made sure my commentary as to what kind of snake it might be and how to handle it was given from my soapbox high and far away on Bobs front casting deck. I would have cut my line. Kudos to Phil for letting the snake get away without a rapala in its back....and he got to keep his lure!!

Had a good time. Twas my first time on the river but hopefully not my last.

...and that bowfin hit like a ton of bricks. I really hit it pretty hard on the hookset and I thought I had him but he rolled up on the surface, winked at me and spit my jig out.

It had straightened the wire keeper out on my jig. Odd. Seems like it must have just had that part in its mouth but wasnt letting go without a fight.

I was hoping it was a bass. It would have been a very big bass from the short fight but Bob swears he saw it when it rolled and it was a bowfin. Bob is out to get me though as you can clearly see from his photoshopping of my 5-6lb bass in his pictures. Wink

Making Mike's delicate little lady hands so much bigger in all the photos helped a lot, Bob. Wink Laughing

phil.
how can you say I have wimpy hands after I wrastled that snake into submission so you could get your helicopter lure back?

and bob.

remember when I "accidentally" threw your little bluegill lure into the depths of McDonnough?

....well, it really was an accident. sorry about that.

Nice job guys!

I agree it's definitely a northern water snake. Here's one I caught on a senko a few years ago. Though it wasn't nearly as big as the one Phil caught.

And more swimming squirrels...lol. Don't know how I missed this thread before

Went out today thanks to Yom Kippur. It was great. Overcast skies threatening rain. Didn't see another boat from 8:00am 'til 1:30pm. Was fishing for pike. Hooked one early and broke it off on some rocks. Sad Went to the old outflow. It was all mine! Still too many weeds for my big swimbaits. Relied on my Sebile Magic Swimmer soft body rigged weedless and live bait. Caught a lot of stuff (3 bowfins) but no pike. Met some guys back at the launch who fished the Middletown are today and had large and smallmouth, and who were catching all pike a few days ago in the Hartford area when they were after bass.

BIG pike rig. Usually use it on the river when I'm letting it drift way the hell down, the hero drift! I'll put a 10+ inch bait on it. When it disappears, I know I've got a decent fish.

Little catfish took a pretty big bait

Bowfins

This bowfin made off with the grip I was using. Was going to be nice and revive him, and as I shifted hands to reach for my trolling motor he thrashed. Lost the grip and he took it to the bottom. It may pop back up at some point and somebody will have a little extra bonus catch. F*cking fish!

All in all, it beat the hell out of work.

I haven't even seen a bowfin, yet! They all hit minnows, right? I might start throwing smaller lures.

Yes to your question. They were all in the very back. Tons of bait breaking around me. Someone lost a rap minnow, but that didn't quite make up for my grip. PECo, I think you're still up on me contributing an entire outfit to Winchester!
