I fished the saugatuck today for an hour and got a couple little spotted bass. All I had with me where small inline spinners and an ultralight rod with 4lb test. With this wind, I wasn't able to cast very far at all, so I went under the bridge at the far north of the lake, that's where I caught my fish. I plan to go there and throw some bigger lures and live bait on the main lake in the near future if it's not so windy.

I think they where hybrids of largemouth and spotted bass, not exactly sure.

Spotted bass are only found in the Midwest and parts of the Southeast. Largemouths and smallmouths are the bass you find in the Saugy.

no pics, then it must have just been a largemouth. It def wasn't a smallie or crappie or rock bass, I know them all very well. It had some markings above the stripe across the side, that threw me off.

Sometimes largemouth bass have a distinct leopard spot pattern on their backs. Here's one that TurtleKiss (aka Kira) caught at Batterson Park Pond a couple of years ago. The spots don't show up very well from the side, but show up vividly when viewed from above:

Spotted bass look a lot like largemouth. The dorsal fin and mouth are the easiest way to tell. The corner of the jaw doesn't extend beyond the eye like a largemouth.

And that's why " the res isn't a get rich fast kinda place" you have to put in your hours and I'm not just talking Saturday mornings. The res is one of the best places to fish.

I live nearby saugy and fish it very hard all season. It can drive you CRAZY for weeks at a time but when the reward comes its amazing. There are SOME patterns to the place like the spring smallie and walleye around the causeway but the big browns are a little tougher [ think dam area and thermalcline].There is also a real good calico bass population but of course they have to come to you being shorebound.I have seen huge fish dead in the water probably of old age but at 830 acres and no boats allowed that will happen.Walleyes are reproducing at saugy and the next state record may come from the res.The brown record may fall again too!!.
