Last night I looked at the Bridgeport Harbor buoy reports online and saw it was getting lower compared to 72.1 degrees 2 days ago. Checked again around 12:30pm today before heading out and saw the readings as of that time were 70.2 which had me thinking they would be out there.
Started off at the cannon around 2:20pm with high tide scheduled for 4:04pm. Lures I threw included original pearl shad Flat Rap FLR-10, purple gold Clackin Rap CNR-7, flake purple ghost Max Rap MXR-15, flake blue sardine Max Rap MXR-11, spotted minnow Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10, croaker Saltwater Skitter Pop SSP-9, purpledescent Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9, and bleeding pearl Jointed J-11. Never had a single hit or follower.
Later I went over to Remington to see what was going on. Didn't see much happening with snappers but progies were thick from what I was seeing. Only saw 1 taylor landed by a chunker. Gave it a number of casts before heading back Downtown around 4:20pm to take a break and grab something to eat and drink.
Got back to Remington around 5pm to find it quiet with no fishermen. Casted from the popular corner out towards the deeper water. Had 1 hit on the FLR-10. 3 other fishermen who I usually see came later. One was throwing small chunks on a smaller hook and was into snappers. He also caught 2 taylors no bigger than 2 pounds, 2 baby sea robins, 2 porgies around 8", and 1 tiny sea bass.
I hit the road around 7pm.
Later towards sunset is when I started seeing snappers breaking on the surface. Somebody said he was seeing a combination of bigger snappers and smaller taylors in the mix. Saw a snapper jumping out of the water fast as if something was chasing it. Seagulls flocked together on the UI dock as sunset got closer as if fish were coming in.
When I left to take a break Downtown I called the direct cell # of the local game warden because of 2 fishermen taking every porgy they were landing. About 20 to 30 minutes later when I got back is when I saw those fishermen no longer there.
One weird thing I witnessed to top it off was something like a UFO siting! Saw 3 dim lights over LI between Port Jeff and Smithtown. They would occasionally get dimmer or disappear and then reappear in a different spot. They'd also slowly move but stay in the same area. After about 15 minutes they vanished. Anything historic called the Smithtown Sighting in the books? |
