GKolyak (Genna) and I hit the Reef on the high and outdoing tide starting around 12:30am. We were hoping for keeper stripers and gator blues.
Genna tried throwing a number of pencil poppers and a 9" black Sluggo. Lures I played around with included a pearl grey shiner Flat Rap FLR-16, flake purple ghost Max Rap MXR-15, chrome black purple Max Rap MXR-15, Bomber Jointed Shallow Magnum, bunker X-Rap Jointed Shad XJS-13, mullet Saltwater Skitter Pop SSP-12, and croaker Saltwater Skitter Pop SSP-12.
We spent about 3 or 4 hours out there and also took a 20 minute break at the car for something to eat and drink before heading back out to the reef.
Genna didn't get a single hit and I caught a 16" schoolie on the flake purple ghost MXR-15.
Another guy came out there about 20 minutes after we got there. He lost a nice fish that was taking out line and going into the current alongside the Reef.
Genna and I called it a night at 4:30am. |

Idk I see that Micheal sometimes does... And just curious how were u fishing those pencils... I never thought off them to be much off a bait to use at night, did u just use a slow constant retrive?? _________________ when is it a bad time to go fishing??....never |

i tried the slow retrieve, painfully slow retrieve, popping it like a popper, 100mph retrieve, and the pencil popper shaking of the rod while slowly reeling(and fingers on the line due to slack.) Also tried atom atomizer as a popper, and as a slow retrieve(yellow/red.) The pencil popper is dark purple/black on top and white on bottom. Also tried 9" sluggo, and storm shad(bunker) in 6 inches, and a white 3oz bunker jig. tried different ways to fish all of them(i hate sticking to the same tactic if its obviously not working.) Forgot to rig dead eels, and lost the sluggo within 30 minutes on a buoy rope which i got back at low tide!
I tried the top of the water column, bottom(practically dredged the bottom and also bounced off the bottom) and middle of the column with a ghost xrap(4+in.) |

At the reef using a popper is common after dark as long as its similar or is a pencil popper as they do simulate a swimmer also and even shallow divers dive too much a lot of times there. I went there tonight and got skunked as did 3 other guys. Walked all the way out and threw everything for hours and I got nothing, 1 of the other guys had a decent size 1 on but it got off and that was it for the night. I got there at 5:50 and stayed until 11:30 and am ready for bed now as I have to work tomorrow morn. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

Well faster more unpredictable topwaters arnt ussually ussed at night as it make it harder to the fish to follow _________________ when is it a bad time to go fishing??....never |

Your absolutely correct there! I used a nice slow retrieve with it with a little jerk here and there to make the fish aware it was there. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....
