So i've fished from the shore for too long and have read and seen soooo many pictures of many of you guys on your fishing kayaks that it made me want to buy one now too! I guess my question is what kind of yak(s) do you own and what do you recommend? This would be my first kayak and its sole purpose would be to fish from it. Any specific makes/models that you would recommend? Sit in or sit-on-top?

Again im new to the whole kayak thing so any recommendations help!

Laughing Buy THIS one:

I'm serious. Wink If you search the forum for posts about fishing kayaks, the Future Beach Trophy 125 DLX is one of the best values, if not THE best value, in fishing kayaks.

Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have fun with it. Good luck! Very Happy

Peco's got it right. Many many many people on here have future beach kayaks but i didnt have any leg room when i sat in one at the store. Its a great starter kayak but im 5'7'' right now and i just wasnt comfy with that one so i kept searching for the right kayak. If youre going to be fishing in waves like on the ocean or mostly fishing in the summer id get a sit on top kayak cause when waves get in a sit in kayak youll need to constantly empty it with a bildge or cup and during the summer the suns soo hot youd want to stay cool so the sit on tops scupper holes will allow water to come up if youre light enough and keep you a little bit wet. I prefer sit in kayaks cause i fish all year from ice on to ice out and sit ins jump make me feel safer. I have the eagle run 12 kayak made by field and stream and i love it. I do wish there was a storage in the front and i wish the back storage mold went to the bottom of the kayak instead of leaving a little gap under it cause if something slides back there.. good luck getting it while youre on the water. My dad has the Old town vapor in camo and he and i love it. Lots of leg room and storage space. Only bad thing about it is that it sits very low to the water so if there is a large wave then youre going to take on some water. But the eagle run and vapor are great kayaks. Could you give me a little bit more detail.

Price range?
Are you tall/short?
Do you carry alot of gear with you?
What seasons do you fish in?
Do you fish the ocean, lakes/ponds, rivers?
Would you need electronics like a fishfinder?
Are you a flipping/casting, dropshotting/ jigging, trolling guy?
Does you car have large roof top space?

Once you answer these ill do some looking and give you some choices. Another thing you could do if you havent fished in a kayak before is borrow someone elses kayak or rent a kayak so you can get a feel for what its like and what specs youll be looking for.

dont bother with those future beach. i have 2 and they suck for leg and foot room and dont cut thru the water for crap. no paddle holder, the flotation falls out..... junk junk junk

go with an old town vapor !!!! they have mega room, so much so that i can get up on my knees and pee in a cup. i have an angler version and it doesnt get much better for a sit in @!

Yeah if youre willing to spend that much. The old town vapor is a great looking kayak and it paddles pretty well.

Price range? My absolute max would be around $600 (which is why i was really looking for a used yak)
Are you tall/short? I'm 6'0 210lbs
Do you carry alot of gear with you? Not really a lot - a small tackle box's worth
What seasons do you fish in? spring through fall
Do you fish the ocean, lakes/ponds, rivers? lakes, ponds, and rivers
Would you need electronics like a fishfinder? I would like one, but i dont need one (finding out depth would be ideal which is why i would want one)
Are you a flipping/casting, dropshotting/ jigging, trolling guy? i'm more of a flipping/casting guy. I havent really trolled much, but if i got a yak i would def do it
Does you car have large roof top space? I have a jeep wrangler and can get figure out a way (tieing it down to my rollcage (i have a soft top)

If youre 6 feet tall then i wouldnt even look at the future beach kayak. Itd be way tooo small for you. Youre probably going to want a sit in kayak. The kayak i have, eagle run 12 is twelve feet long, has medium storage, very stable, great seat, footroom, and has rod holders. The rod holders make trolling hard but since you dont troll then itll be fine. My depth finder shoots through the hull of the boat so it works out very well. And its lower than your cost. I got mine for 350$ but now they are like 500$. The old town dirigo 120 is basically the same kayak as mine but improved. Its about 80$ out of your price range but would be worth the money. I think your top 3 choices for around 600$ are the old town vapor 10, eagle run 12, and old town dirigo 120. All are really nice kayaks. And the old towns come with an anchor troller and anchor. Dicks had a sring time kayak sale where all kayaks were basically half price. You could wait and see if they have one this fall or get one now but itll be close to your price.

I am 6'1" and the future 126 fit me perfectly fine and i used to weigh like 250lb and it worked good. I just don't use my kayak any more thats why I listed it on here. I really haven't used it once this season.

I have had both sit in and sit on top kayaks. i would definitely recommend a sit on top. Stability, comfort, and casting ability are all better on the sit on tops that i have had. my friend has a future beach 160 sit on top. i tried it out and LOVE IT. they sell it at ocean state job lots for 400. i can stand and fish off of it, absolutely love it. also he is 6' 3'' and can fully extend his legs in it. a lot of room for storage, and it has 2 cup holders. get this kayak and you wont regret it.

Sit inside kayaks are inherently more stable than sit on top kayaks, because your center of gravity is lower in a sit inside kayak. Wink The smartest thing you could do before buying a kayak is to actually paddle a bunch of them and see which one works best for you.
