My son and I hit Highland as the last day of summer ritual. We do it every year the day before he starts school. I've been busy working so I was glad to get a weekday to go play!!

Morning was rather chilly, and only warmed to 75ºF by 3:00. Wind was calm in the morning but was pretty rough after 9 am. Water temp is dropping 76.9 was the warmest we saw in 3rd bay. 1st bay the water was rather dingy brown, Second bay was a bit more greenish but still brown and 3rd bay was green. Algae bloom?? Weeds in 1st bay were ugly and half dead! The nice green stuff was down in 3rd bay by the brook.

We managed a few fish in first bay around the docks, But kind of slow. Moved to 3rd bay and got some decent fish. Action slowed to a crawl around 9 to 9:30. So we hit the deeper water with Dropshots and cranks. Hit and miss with just a few 2+ pounders from the deep. The bluegils were active all over the place, We even had some good sized perch case the cranks back to the boat.

Finished the day with an hour of some fun ripping around in the Strato's. The skiers and jet skis were out in full force by 2 PM. So if you can't beat them~join them! Dang that's some serious fun! Off the water by 3.

Wow, the water was a lot cooler in Highland than it was in McDonough. I'm looking forward to the post Labor Day lull out on the water. I might check out Highland then.

I'm looking forward to cooler water and a shallow bite. Maybe fall will come early, But last until spring? Very Happy

I heard they used some chemical to kill off the weeds there.

If they did it isn't working very well. Some of the best fishing I ever experienced at Highland was 9/2 in 30/40 FOW Weed Beds!

I'd love to see that happen(fall last til spring) But I also have to agree about the cooler weather, Beseck would be good with less pleasure boaters for once.

Both! Smallest 13" about a pound. Largest (smallmouth) 4lbs. Drop shot robo worms. 4.5" and 3.8 Black Shad Kietech's with a 12" leader and a 3/8" weight.

All except one parked in 30/40 FOW.

About 18 total over a 7 hour period.

One in the bay off the center bay. Other than that all were deep in grass beds.

I tried Ribsters and Senkos with a variety of swim baits, spinner baits, crank baits and jigs. Nothing. Every time we went deep drop shotting we started catching again.

This wasn't the biggest. My cell phone died trying to e-mail a few picts. But on average of 18 fish at least ten were in this range. The shore in the back ground will give you a pretty good idea of how far off shore we had to fish to locate them. That was my first time fishing deep water. I'll be doing it more often from now on.
