Tried the old saltwater fishing with fishfinder this morning. I hit 2 blues before sun up on a black teaser despite the fact that fishfinder ate 2 bad luck yogurts yeasterday and jinxed himself. Then the sun came up and i got 1 more blue on a spook.
Ran into fishingkid and saw some professional casters who had some never before seen techniques.
Was fun to be out. _________________ Trust me. Use waxworms ! |

Did you see those flimsy rods those asain guys were using? One of them bent like they had a fish on when it was only a glob of sea weed. |

Want to have fun w/ blues? Try catching them on a 10' noodle rod for salmon/steelhead and 4lb. test. Changes up the same-old, same-old. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

These guys couldn't even get their kastmasters out 30'. They weren't trying to have fun like you mentioned. I was suprised their reels weren't upside down. _________________ Trust me. Use waxworms ! |

Yeh, you know you're in trouble if the guy next to you is reeling with that spinning reel facing up. Wasn't too surprised when a couple of guys showed up on the Watch Hill jetty with similar gear, 6lb. test and penny sinkers. I was surprised that they were going to give it a go at 2a.m.! I'd just released a striper and was hoping they hadn't seen it as I tried to convice them that there were no fish around. They took up positions 15 ft. away on an empty jetty. Three casts and three bottom rigs later they disappeared. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

I am not asian, nor using a noodle rod, but I gotta tell you something.
Last night I was fishing in Old Lyme between 11pm-2am. I brought my 5600 BCX on a 7 ft rod. Everyone else had 10-15 ft rods tossing 5 oz trying to get their baits out into the CT river. One of the guys asked me what I thought I was going to do with that dinky little bait caster.
Well I was putting my 1 1/4oz plug out farther than he was getting his baits out.
No one caught anything, but it felt good anyway to out-cast my condescending neighbours with my "dinky" tackle.
Some guys are not fun to be around when they measure their manhood by the size of their poles and how much lead is hanging from them. |

When i feel like bein the man, i break out the custom made 12 piece 26 foot surf rod.
But I hear ya. I can outcast most guys usin 11's and 12's with my 9. Though I do frequently use an 11 or 12 myself depending on the circumstances.
I love the looks you get when you shoot your plug 30-40 yards past em _________________ ...of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy.

All depends on what your throwing, and where you got to get it to. A lot of times when I'm fishing the shoreline I'm casting right up to the waters edge, and guys on the beach are trying to huck it a mile. Distance often isn't that big a deal. However, when you really need to get it out there, nothing comes close to a long surf rod and a modern baitcasting reel. Just about every serious surf casting setup in my favorite shop, Red Drum Tackle in Hatteras, was a baitcasting combo. It's pretty cool watching guys who are really good launch those casts on the beach - 600 to 700+ft, with some guys who can put it out further. Well beyond my capabilities, but I am sending a Daiwa reel down to Ryan White at Hatteras Jacks to put custom mag brakes in. They do custom rods too, including a tuna jigging rod that makes my Shimano Trevala feel like a lead weight and can still dead lift a 25lb. plate off the floor.
