Member Mikeyinstfd and I hit the falls in Seymour starting around 9am. This was Mike's first time going for smallies and fishing the Naugy.

2 lures I stuck with were the brown trout Flat Rap FLR-6 and glass minnow Husky Jerk HJ-6. Mike tried throwing some 2" soft plastics. Mike had 1 hit but that was it so we headed down to the island.

Mike also tried walk the dog down by the island and I stuck with those 2 Rapalas but both of us had no luck.

Later we went to the Greenway in Derby. Our first few stops didn't produce anything but once we got into some deeper water and smelled some bait, things picked up.

I stuck with the trusty glass minnow HJ-6 and also played around with a shad Shallow Shad Rap SSR-5 while Mike played around with a few different lures. Mike caught a little striper on the bottom with a jig. That was his first striper in a long time he said. He was also getting curious followers on a bluegill SSR-5. I was doing pretty well with the HJ-6 and caught a total of 5 schoolies up to 16", a dinky largemouth, and a 13" smallie.

Mike decided to throw a clown Flat Rap FLR-6 after nothing else would get a fish to hit. That's when he caught an average schoolie. Then there came a nice hit. He said he thought he had either a 6 pound largemouth or nice sized striper on from the way it was fighting on his medium light setup with 8 pound mono. As he got it right at the edge of the weeds he saw the fins which meant it was either a largie or smallie. He then saw the brown color of a smallmouth. Right as I get to the scene one hook popped out and then the other hook did. He lost what would have been his first smallmouth bass and a nice sized one for a first.

We kept fishing for a bit longer before we called it a day around 12:45pm.

A smallmouth pulling on your 8 pound mono like a 6 pound largemouth sounds to me like a 3 pound smallie.
