Was anyone out on the sound yesterday? I made plans to take some folks out fishing early in the AM and checked the forecast on the news, on SeaTow's phone app, and on weather underground. All said waves less than a foot in the sound. So we head out at 6am and got thrashed! The waves were relentless and approaching four feet with some impressive sets. We tried fishing for a while but it was way too much and headed back into a river but they actually got sick on the way in. Others that came out after us all seemed to pull up and leave before us and I've never seen so many other boats fishing in the mouth of the river seeking shelter from the boiling sound.

Today the forecast is the same, waves less than a foot, but I don't feel like taking another trip down just to find out that it's so wildly different than reported. It's ridiculous that they can be that far off with the reporting of conditions.

Hi TS,

FYI:
When the wind (even light winds) comes from the SE to SW, the ocean and sound will be rough because its coming on to the shore line.
And the outgoing tide plus currents don't help either because the wind is opposing the water flow direction.

Wind from the W to N -> is blowing off shore so the water will mostly be calmer!

Best regards,

Seems like that would be common sense. Also seems that people that are paid to do this as a career would know this and could get come up with a report that more closely resembled actual conditions.

Hi TS,

The "ONLY" reliable Wx reporting service I trust is from NOAA . Thumbs Up
Keep in mind that tide and current flows aren't factored in marine Wx forecasts because they differ everywhere in coastal areas!
So opposing wind and water flows will increase surface water hights!
This is where local knowledge of the water conditions comes into play!

Here is the link to their marine forecasting.

SeaDog is definately right on that one. What you need to know is that the LIS is a maze of currents, changing bottom, and lots of water flowing in and out. It can be dead calm on a slack tide, and be throwing up the conditions you described an hour or so later. You need to familiarize yourself with the direction of tide flows in certain areas, where the rips occur, and wind direction and strength. A SW wind pushing against a flood tide can stack up really quickly, especially as you travel through rips. Make mental notes of the flow directions in various locations by checking the crab pots. Get the NOAA tide app. The differences can be an hour from places within a few miles of one another. I run my 14' boat across to Fisher's all the time. Wind direction and tide tables determine where I can safely fish. I can run over on a SW wind (10k is my threshold) on a slack tide and fish the protected north. If I don't wait for the next slack tide, I'm going to get wet on the way back. As SD noted, N/NW gives you a lot more protection running the coastline. East winds can be really brutal, as they blow directly against the ebb tide. Max flood and ebbs, particularly with a full moon, can really increase teh size of the rips in teh Race and other places. There is definately a learning curve as to where you can go and when, regardless of the size of the boat you are running.
