This is a late report from last week. I hit up lake winchester. Got there around 7:30. I tried to primarily fish the stumps for most of the day. We seemed to catch mostly smaller bass until I had a nice hit on a jig and it snapped my 30lb braid! Come to find out my new abu garcia spinning real has a slice in the bail so it cut the braid on me. The fish jumped out the water three times after I lost it trying to spit the lure. I really hope he did because he had a bunch of line attached to that jig to get stuck on stuff. After that I calmly put down the rod and switched to a different pole but kept the same jig on there. About 30 mins later I landed this nice 4lb 21.5in largemouth. We packed up around 1 and headed home. This is such a beautiful lake with nice scenery.
and for those of you that have never been, heres stump land:

I knew that I should have thrown a jig, yesterday! Nice fish! It's been a couple of years since I've seen a largemouth bass over four pounds come out of Winchester Lake. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

As slow as this lake seems to fish sometimes I really think there are some big lunkers in there hiding we just need to find them. |

Nice. Hanover Pond has 5 gallon bucket and submerged shopping cart land. There is also a submerged car in an area you would never suspect! _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

It is the jerkbait/top bait rod. So far so good. I had real good luck using it as a jerkbait rod at the beginning of the season. |

there are some giants in winchester, about a month ago my dad and i were fishing the stump field and he had a big fish on the line and when it jumped out it looked like a 6 pounder or more but then it dove under one of the trees and we had to cut the line. |

I went back to winchester lake again today. Today I had more hits than last time. I caught 8 largemouth and got my first pike out of winchester. It was a small pike but pike none the less. I also found tons and tons of jelly fish in there that were not there last time I fished. Must of had a hatch or something.
Lunker bass of the day 3lb 10oz:
The small jelly fish. There was lots of them.

I've only been bass fishing since 2009 and according to my bass log, lunker bass wise Winchester is second on my list. I think over 3 years I've fished it roughly 9x not including ice fishing. Only 2x full 8+ hour days. Usually I hit Winchester after I get bored at West Hill catching tons of small bass or at Highland from the jet skiers. But lunker wise my tin can has landed a 5.14, 4.14, 4.10, and either a 4.4 or 4.2 can't remember. That's not bad for only 9 trips for 3 years. Also one year in 2010 I seen 3 bass congregating near a certain stump in a small cove during spawing. The only one I was able to get to bite was the smallest one at 5.14lbs and the biggest one that was swimming around with the 5.14lbs easily dwarfed the 5.14lber. The thing looked like a green carp I couldn't believe it and the back width was just ridiculous. Anyways Winchester has quality fish in there just everything is always full and fat. I've never caught a skinny bass out of there or pike so there's got to be a good food source in there could be crawfish. I haven't seen any alewives in there but one day I was froggin in the back cove and just looking around at the lillypads and there were thousands of shiners swimming around and they all look like medium heavys from the bait store so that could be the source. _________________ http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o21/PickerelPete/IfeH-r.gif |
