Went to the Farmington river with two buddies that really enjoy trout fishing. I have fished for many years, but this was only my 2nd time going for trout - it was quite an experience for me and really quite different. We fished from shore and used powerbait on #16 treble hooks and egg weights. These hooks are absurdly small when you compare them to the hooks i use for my GY senkos, crawdads, etc. But anyways, the night before we went out i watched many YouTube videos that insisted on using mini marshmellows and powerbait, but i forgot to grab some marshmellows when i got out of work so that whole thing didnt happen unfortunately.
We arrived at around 4pm and within 30/45 minutes we started seeing rain. The rain quickly escalated from a little rain to quite the storm. It rained for about an hour+ and i quickly soaked through ever article of clothing i was wearing. Before the rain we didnt see a bite, but as soon as it really started coming down we immediately landed two rainbows: one being 13" and the other being 14". Maybe 15 minutes after that one of my buddies was holding one of his two rods when he said he was feeling tiny nibbles on his bait. He set the hook and started reeling into what was the largest trout he ever hooked into. Unlike myself, he has fished for trout many years so his excitement and determination to land that fish was high. The fight lasted about 4 minutes which included alot of drag pulling. Just when he had it right next to shore the fish surfaced and it was the biggest trout any of us have ever seen in person - it was big and it was FAT (easily 24"+).
There was one thing we forgot to bring other than the marshmellows... a net and just when we went to grab it (my hands were literally going to touch it) he spit the hook. My friend first started with some loud words and phrases (that only would be found on websites such as urbandictionary.com). In the end he was pretty upset to say the least. That was the last fish we hooked into for the day as the bite died.
Overall fun experience with friends and i'll never forget how close the thunder and lightning was to us when the rain was literally going sideways. If we landed the big trout we had on and if my friend's window to his car actually went up it would have made the day all the better, but i still cant complain overall with a wet seat going home - i was soaked anyways.
One thing i noticed - the orange powerbait brought all the bites and fish. Any of the other colors did not produce even a bite. |
