When I looked at the weather forecast, yesterday, I saw that we'd have a window with no rain and little wind between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm, today, so I called NWDarkCloud (aka Bob) and we decided to fish Cedar Lake in Chester, today. I had never been there before, but it's a nice little lake:
We got a late start and didn't get onto the water on Bob's boat until just after 7:00 am. But when we did, it was beautiful out there. The air temperature was still cool and there was almost no wind. What few clouds there were provided a little bit of relief from the sun. I started throwing my beat up watermelon red Scum Frog Bigfoot frog in every direction around the boat, while Bob took his sweet time tying a lure onto one of his setups. I got only one hit on the frog, when it was pulled into the coontail weeds that cover the bottom down to eight or 10 feet, but missed the hookset. It was only then that Bob revealed he had tied on a drop shot wacky rigged five inch Yum Dinger and planned to fish the outside weedline. He threw it toward the center of the lake while I continued to throw the frog toward the shore. After several casts, he put his rod down to tie a lure onto his other setup. Of course, he got a hit on the drop shot wacky Senko at that moment and boated the first fish:
Yes, Bob, I know that it's a fish. I even know that it's a 2-1/4 pound largemouth bass. Yes, I know that YOU caught it. Although the first fish had us thinking that we'd get a lot of action, it ended up being a really slow day. I didn't get my first fish until 50 minutes later, after I had started throwing a wacky rigged green pumpkin/red flake five inch Senko:
Yes, Bob, I know that yours was bigger. As I said, the fishing was slow all day. But the biggest story of the day was the blazing sun and stifling heat. As the clouds cleared from the sky, we slowly turned into charcoal briquettes. The wind rose to about five miles per hour from the south, which provided a little bit of relief, but it was HOT out there! Bob ended up boating three largemouth bass, including the 2-1/4 pounder that turned out to be the lunker. Here are his other two fish:
I caught six largemouth bass, but none of them came even close to two pounds. I also caught a sunny and a chain pickerel:
I thought that the pickerel might be a northern pike, at first, because it was more of a pale yellow color than green. I might have seen a pike because Bob had pulled some fishing line with a nice wooden stick bobber, a couple of split shots, a super sharp treble hook and a wire leader from a tree, which made me wonder why anyone would use a wire leader there. The blazing sun and oppressive heat made us seek shelter in the shade of some trees on the west shore toward the end of the day. I told Bob that we couldn't leave until one of us caught a "just one more" fish. Bob got the first fish of the day, but I got the last one:
We got off of the water at 5:00 pm. As we stowed our gear and secured the boat on the trailer, a couple of guys launched in a Skeeter bass boat. I think their plan to fish in the evening was much better than ours. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

Bob and I think we would have had a better day of fishing if the clouds had rolled in, instead of holding off like they did. The blazing sun isn't good for fishing, because fish don't have eyelids. But we have a plan! We're going to distribute baseball caps to all of the largemouth bass the next time we go fishing on a sunny day. That oughta help. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Now that sounds like a well thought out plan. I thought you planned something silly like errecting a huge sunbrella over the area you're fishing. |

ya it was a brain baker no dought ....beautiful day none the less I agree with Phil the bite would of been alot better for us if we had just a few more of the big fluffy clouds over head but they just wouldnt move south they just hung in the sky to the north like a cruel reminder that releif was just out of reach..when we first got there the water was flat calm while I poked around drank my coffee and tied up I took the chance to soak up what was happening on the lake we saw couple schools of bait fish out in the middle getting torn up bye something (Big trout ) most likely but every once and a while I would hear the glup! that make me think might be a bass or 2 in there feeding as well but when we moved in to check it out wind picked up and schools vanished.
Thanks for a chance to get out Phil another GREAT DAY on the water _________________ I Love to fish......Not a big fan of sitting in the boat alone ....the Conversation and the company make it perfect |

Great report Phil
I think that's a small pike as you said. It looks as if it doesn't have the usual chain pattern of a pickerel and the color looks more pike than pickerel. |

The dark vertical line through the eye indicates that it's a chain pickerel. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |
