I have been fishing the quarry quite a bit over the last few weeks and the last 2 days before today have been the first two times I did not do well. I caught only 1 sunny over that time period and had very few bites. I'm thinking that maybe it is being fished a little too hard and I may need to lay off for a bit. So today I planned to go to another local pond that I've been fishing since I was very young but I wanted to stop at the quarry first to see if all the rain in Naugatuck had the river running into the quarry. When I got there I saw that only a tiny bit of water was running in under the rocks between the Naugatuck and the quarry. I brought just my pole and one Senko with me and figured I would throw a few casts then hit the road. I went over to the cove where the water was running in and within a few minutes had a fish on. It was a 12" bass. I kept casting and in maybe 10 more minutes I had another one. I couldn't get the hook out of its mouth so I cut the line and let it go. I went to my car as it started pouring. I waited out about 10 minutes of heavy rain then I was back. My first cast I caught a small sunny.

Over the next 1.5 hours I caught a total of 11 LMB. The smallest was 11" and all the others were between 14" and 17". This is by far the best day I've had there. I have never caught that many LMB there and they were all good sized. More notably than the ones I caught however, were a couple that I lost. In the middle of my time there I saw a HUGE bass swimming in very shallow water seemingly going after small sunnies. I threw a couple casts his way with no luck. A little while later I hooked into what was the biggest fish of the day at the time. I thought it was the same fish but when it jumped (and spit the hook Mad

) I realized it was a bit smaller. Right when it was about 8:20 and I was getting ready to leave I cast again to the spot where I saw the hug fish before. Shortly after the Senko hit the water BAM fish on! I knew right away that this was the one I was after. It fought like the 20" bullhead I caught a couple weeks ago. Knowing that I would be furious if it spit the hook I wanted to get it on land ASAP. It saved most of its fight for right at the shoreline. I was trying and trying to pull it onto land but it would just take more drag. Finally I made one more effort to get it in and it got caught on the rocks on the edge of shore. It was halfway out of the water. As I moved to grab it, it bolted for the water and snapped my line. Evil or Very Mad

It seemed like a definite 5 lber to me. It would have been my biggest bass but oh well maybe I'll get em next time.

I'm wondering why the fish were SO active today when I couldn't catch anything the last couple days? Most of the fish I caught were near where the water was running in. I had never caught more than 1 or 2 fish in the same area there before so I thought this was strange. It was not even a big area. Maybe the raised water level or the moving water has something to do with this? They seemed just as active whether it was raining or not.

Also, these were the most aggressive bass I've ever caught. Every one of them fought like hell which is somewhat rare out of the quarry. They were not hitting the Senko particularly hard (although I was fishing it much faster than usual) but once they were on it was never easy. Once I got them out of the water about half of them shook out of my grip at least once. They never rested at all. I'm not sure what caused this either.

And PECo, yeah I figured that's what it was. I didn't know the moving water would make them so aggressive though. I guess it makes sense though since it is usually a stagnant body of water pretty much. I will continue to fish there now and can't wait for the next big rainstorm. Wink

I'll be the guy you hear about getting hit by lightning that was too stupid to leave a good thing.
