Rangerskid and I decided to got the the reservoirs today as we have been fishing several spots in the area recently but hadn't gotten around to the long hikes yet. We started around 1pm at the first one. I was throwing a green spinnerbait and he was throwing a wacky Senko. Not as much as a nibble and when I lost my spinner on an underwater branch we decided to move on to number 2. At number 2 we saw many tiny sunnies swimming near the edge as we worked our way around the entire reservoir. I threw a wacky Senko and several Rapala's with a few small hits all coming on the Senko. We spent about 2 hours at #2 and the skunk was still well intact. After a bit of misguidance we ended up taking a 45 minute trek all the way back to #4. I was very hot and waded in waist deep as I got in I saw the first decent sized bass of the day swimming about 15 feet from me. It was probably 16-17" and as I went to throw the Senko in its direction the Senko flew off. This was the story of the day. After that, we saw a few tiny bass but nothing more. We then navigated back to #3 and it looked promising. Lots of great structure in the water and plenty of shore access almost all the way around. I said that this would be the place we would finally beat the skunk. I was fishing off the dam with my toes in the water which was about the nicest thing that happened all day. I was throwing a Rapala Husky Jerk and was thrilled when a 4in bass paid attention to it. He never hit it but just knowing there was a fish interested in something was nice. I got exactly one small hit there before Rangerskid called me over to see a school of LMB all over 14" and led be a monster 20"+ fish! ALAS, no matter what we threw their way the most we could get was a passing glance. Its nice to know that there are fish in there though. I tried my last resort popper with a rattling tail and got nibbled by nearby sunnies. As the storm was approaching we made a very brisk walk back to the car and were not quite in time. All in all we spent 6.5 hours there (probably 1.5 spent walking) and neither of us caught a single fish. I have heard time and time again about big fish in these reservoirs but after fishing them about 10 times I have only caught 3 pikeral and 1 bass in the first one and that is it. I don't think I will be going back there ever again. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best

Oh, you can't give up, yet! Were you fishing slowly? You should let a wacky Senko fall all the way to the bottom on slack line and let it sit for a couple of seconds before twitching it back off of the bottom. You could try this with a Texas rigged Zoom Baby Brush Hog, too. When fish aren't feeding aggressively, they'll often pick up a lure off of the bottom. Give it another try! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

I used to fish those Resevoirs quite a bit about 5 years ago nad i always had good luck. But it seems over the years the populations have seriously dwindled. I don't know exactly why, but I have seen a lot of bass on stringers coming up the path to the parking lot. I mean cmon, who the hell eats largemouth bass?? |

Let me comfort you
I went to Risley reservoir yesterday and threw a Texas rig and a spinnerbait from shore. I haven't fished from shore for so long I lost all sense of caution. So after a few casts my lure hit a tree above me and my reel with new braided line became a disaster, I almost kill myself
I also tried polarized glasses and it was amazing that I saw a 12" bass patrolling the shore for the first time. Later I throw my spinnerbait into the entrance of a cove, got hit, and set the hook. I saw a really big body coming to surface (3-5 pound I guess)...The glasses worked so well and it shocked me and I just stopped and watched the fish, forgot to continue to reel it in...Then, boom....the fish shook the hook off with a explosive jump and disappeared. I almost killed myself again
Tried another one or two hours, got nothing...
At the end I used a rapala to deskunk, got a 13" Perch, and that saved my life so I just got home and respooled the dead reel......
I won't do off-shore fishing anytime soon...I was worrying about the weather so I didn't paddle, then nothing happened |

PeCo- I was fishing very slowly, the only bites I got on it were when it was about to hit the bottom. It was probably the most discouraging day I've had in a long time. I know everyone says you need some sort of boat to fish the reservoirs well but as far as the third one goes I don't think there was too much water that couldn't be covered by shore.
BF- Yeah that's what I've heard. People have said the fishing used to be much better. I know it gets a good amount of pressure but I would still think there should be plenty of fish in there.
Zach-Yeah that sounds like a rough day as well. At least you were able to catch something. It was our plan to go somewhere where we knew we would catch something on the way home but mother nature had other ideas. |

Try a drop shot with a floating bait. You'll need to tie a leader about 12" long about 18" above the DS weight. The leader will be 90deg to the line when in the water. The smaller the bait the better. Gitzit Tubes 3" work well in Brown or Chart. The 3" tube don't float but take their dam sweet time sinking with just a hook minus a tube weight. 4" purple or motor oil worms or small grubs (Walmart) work well also.
This type of drop shot is a pain to cast but will work there. You will definitely need a floating or slow sinking bait for this. Just cast and wait a minute. Lift your rod tip and reel then wait a minute. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from. |

I will spend time trying to learn what any of this means, go to walmart and or Dicks, then try this at the Res lol. If this does not work I'll be seeking you out looking for answers.
But seriously I have no idea what this method is and I will be looking into it. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

Hi,
Thought you guys might be interested in this type of drop-shot rig.
Have used it myself but with large red rubber bands doubled and works great. (mostly ice fishing).
