Went to the reef with my son at 6:30pm-10pm. As I was walking out to the end of the reef, all of a sudden I see birds diving down off to the opposite side of the reef. I run over there and throw my plug in.
Birds were out of reach but second cast was within shouting range, and quickly I'm hooked up with the biggest fish Ive felt at the reef this year. He ran off a bunch off line with a long run to start-might have been a striper-after a couple of long runs, the lure came flying up to the top-damn, seemed like a nice fish.
Next cast, fish on, but its small and a blue, I see it jumping, but he gets off too. One reason the fish were coming off is the water was rough on this side with waves that helped create the slack line needed for the fish to shake of the hooks.
Same thing happened twice at the same time with a guy next to me. I had the first two fish come off, but kept the rest on.
Helped untangle my son's line, took a minute, by then the birds had calmed down and I decided I'd go to the east side. The side I normallly fish-and is very calm compared to the other side.
First cast out on this side, and fish on, its a bluefish, he stays on, I stay on this side. Had a good night. Caught 6 bluefish, 1 striper (last fish I caught after dark)and a bunch of sea robins-I even had a double-two sea robins on the same lure. I also caught the biggest sea robin I have ever seen-triple the size of big ones I normally see, she was huge and put up a good fight! All fish were small and caught with my flat rap and a small kastmaster. |

Sounds like a fun night. Where exactly is the reef? I've been down there once before fishing off the jetty in front of all the houses....is it in that area? |

Just looked at a map....looks like it's around that whole area. How is the area fishing during high tide? I'll be getting out tomorrow but not sure if I will head there or go to Silver Sands |

Yes Jeff, thats exactly where the reef is. If it was high tide you might not have seen it. Fishing close to either tide seem to be best. Silver sands is similar with that long sandbar that goes out almost a mile, just like penfield. Lately the reef has been producing better, but I haven't been to silver sands in few weeks. |
