Fished a tourney last night on Candlewood 6PM to 3AM.
Constant top water blow ups on Spooks and Pop-R's. Difficult to hook up. Small-mouth bite was definitely on in 8/15 fow about 30' from shore. Some big 5lb fish taken. Outside weed line was the area to stay for the big fish. Small 12" and under on the inside.
The SM would blow your lure up with no hook up. Found the 3 second pause after the blow up worked well with a couple twitches afterwards. At one point about 7pm my partner and I caught two at 4lbs as we lifted the lure from the water boat side.
Bite almost completely died by 8pm. Few blow ups here and there but no hook ups.
1am white 5" senkos got the bite started again.
Tried all sorts of lures and depths. Drop shot. Blk/Bl Jigs. Blk Spinner and Buzz Baits and notta thing although the buzz bait worked for a bit in Squanz Cove for one of the contestants. Weeds to thick for cranks. Water clarity was murky with 2/5' visibility.
The winner with 14lbs used 2/3" Tube Jigs in brown.
90% of the bass caught last night were small-mouth. Very few large-mouths in any of the bags.
Bait fish were spread out everywhere on the lake. They were very comfortable frolicking around the boat which leads me to believe the large-mouth went deep post storm. Water temps were 82deg's. |

Sounds like some exciting fishing and some nice fish caught. Ranger Rick what do you think caused the fish kill at the ramp? |

There was probably a tournament the day before. That happened to me at the new fairfield launch and at lilinonah launch. Its usually the first fish caught end up to be the dead ones because the bass fishermen need some weight at the end of the day. Its sad cause most of the fish are nice 2-4lbers. _________________ YouTube Channel: NorthEastFisherman |
