I read an article about a couple of guys in new mexico who had a small pet bass in a tank, they were fooling around throwing gulp 1 inch fry in to the tank to see what the fish would do, and the fish swallowed it, so they countinuly fed the bass gulp for almost 2 weeks and when they ran out is didnt want the goldfish they normaly fed it, ill try to find the article and post the link but i was like wow that stuff is pretty good but im still not sure what do you guys think bullshit or the real deal?

Ive raised tank bass up to about 2-3lb from 1 inchers I got in a bait trap 1 time they will eat anything you drop in a tank from hotdogs to my cats tail (that was funny as hell bye the way) cat sitting on tank looking down at the fish his tail hit the water near the filter opening and POW!! 1 freaked out cat wish I had it on film.
Tank raised bass dont eat or act anything like there wild brothers. So its a realy poor comparision. My bass never said no to anything that moved in the tank it was lunch on the 2 of them would go though 12x 3inch minows in about 2 min cost me 5 gal water every time I fed them (man the wife got pissed) would have to mop up every other day

what size tank did you raise those guys in? i have an old 55 gal tank that i've been debating setting up with some locally caught fish

I agree it is a big difference between wild fish and tank raised. Tank raised fish become conditioned to know that anything that hits the water is food. Just like bass in unpressured waters do. If bass are in a heavily pressured lake the likelihood that they hit anything that enters the water becomes much less as we all know. I'm sure with the right conditions the baits will work fine. But not all the time.

it was a 55 gal dont bother with decorating it they trash it give them black out curtain on 3 sides or they will spook and hurt themselfs.....start the fry on blocks of frozen brine shrimp NEVER use worms then step them up to minnow as soon as u can avoid useing pet shop feeders wild fish have no imunity to all the disesess they carry try to trap all your live bait yourself (not a easy thing) the tank wount stop there growth they will out grow it in about 1.5 years. Blue Gills make a better tank fish there not as distructive and will live on pellet fish food you can decorate the tank to look nice also not as spooky

I was actually thinking sunfish/assorted panfish might be a good choice since the tank isn’t very big, and of course we have a nice variety around here with bluegills, green sunfish, red eared sunfish, pumpkinseeds, crappie, bullhead, etc. With smaller fish like those above I was thinking I might be able to get away with 3 or 4 fish in there?

thereildeal, If youre getting the bullhead make sure his mouth is too small to fit the other fish in because im sure he will try eating them when he gets hungry. I've been wanting to set up another tank for only native fish (bass,sunfish,catfish, etc..) instead of the imported ones (tetras, guppies, bettas, etc..) but everytime i get enough money i spend it on fishing gear Smile

we had a big ass tank in my science class in middle school with all kinds of local fish. the teacher would take us on fishing trips after school and save the biggest of the fish and keep them in the tank for a while. there was a 10 lbs bass and a 12 lbs pike along with a whole mess of other fish. i think it was 500 gallons there was some structure in it. i would suggest throwing a bowfin in there. Very Happy

Jimbo.......are you talking about Mr. K?!?!!?!? I didn't have him as a teacher but my friend did and I still remember taking the bus to school with buckets of fish and dumping them in his tank. I caught a 4 pound large mouth out of paper goods pond which was my PB at the time and tried to bring it in but I was so pissed off when I couldn't find a bucket big enough Razz

Did he ever give you any plastic worms? At the end of the year he gave my friend and I a ton of them as a thank you for bringing the fish in.......he was a cool guy

Also when he was retiring he was giving away that tank and my friend and I almost got it until he decided to keep it Sad
