Decided to cover some freshwater places today instead of heading back to Remington for the blues. Started off at the private lake around 4pm. When I got there I saw the water was an aqua blue color and could smell it! Saw a sign saying they put the pesticides in it.
Stayed with that lake's main lure, the JSR-4. Color was bleeding pearl. Covered a few spots for about an hour and a half and caught 5 bass, 2 bluegills, and 1 pumpkinseed. Lost one bass and had a number of hits. All bass were in the 13" to 15" 1 to 2 pound range. Biggest bluegill was 8" 8oz.
Later I went to Twin Brooks and started off at the cove at the main pond. Had no luck there so I went right over to the pond with the gazebo where I had no luck.
Lures I was playing around with were just a shiner SSR-7 and a baby bass Tiny Torpedo.
Later when I was at the upper part of the pond farther up on the right, I hit a 15" 1 pound pickerel with the Tiny Torpedo. Worked my way down that pond and saw 2 nice bass swimming together. Casted the Tiny Torpedo over them and did a jerking retrieve. They weren't interested in that so I casted again and did a slow steady retrieve. Right as the Tiny Torpedo was about to cross over them, one grabbed it. 15" 2 pounds 4 ounces.
No more luck in that spot so I made 3 more stops before leaving.
Later I went to Bunnells Pond and started off at the island by playing topwater with the Tiny Torpedo. Nothing was interested in it so I moved on to a certain spot that sometimes produces this time of the year.
The nice thing about the spot I moved to is it's right near the edge of weeds before becoming more non-weedy. There's also either a drop off or some extra depth in this honey hole.
Started by casting with the bleeding pearl JSR-4. Had a few sunnies follow it. Switched over to a perch JSR-4 but no followers. Next lure was a grey pearl shiner Clackin Crank CNC-53. First cast out with it, fish on! I feel tugging as if I had a nice fish. Saw it make a jump and I couldn't believe what I had on! It wasn't giving up much of a fight. Made 1 more jump before doing a short run as I got it closer to shore and then landed it. 19" solid 5 pound largemouth bass at Bunnells Pond!!!!
Soon after letting it go and taking a few more casts, I hit the road.
I had a feeling it was feeding on small bluegills and pumpkinseeds that a guy near me was catching with worms. A 5 pound largemouth is a rare catch at Bunnells Pond these days! Another Rapala success! |

Great job Michael. Thats a couple of sweet pond fish. Are you sure that hog is only 19"? I know how deceiving pictures can be, but it really looks like a much longer fish, and 19" is pretty short for a 5lb'er. Either way...very nice fish bro.

I weighed it with my Cabela's digital and also measure length and girth. Length was 19" and girth was 16". |

Nice catch Michael, Some peeps would hassle members about the weight thing. The digital scale should settle things! I got hosed for calling a 22" fish 6 pounds. IMHO girth or how much they have stuffed themselves makes all the difference! As does an accurate scale. I'll believe the scale before any of the calculators! Most say they are only an estimate. Fish come in different shapes and sizes, and can vary greatly, just as humans of the same age/sex/height.. 
Going by the calculators which IMHO only get you close and are usually on the low side. Example length x length x girth ÷ 1,200 =4.81
This calc is closer but sometimes high(5.66 LBS with your measurements).

Curious what you got for a scale weight. Just to see how off the calc's are!
We have just added a brand new scale to to our gear as my old one was usually reading low. So far we haven't caught a good one to do some comparing with the calc's.

Certainly wasn't hassling Mike about anything. My point was that the fish looks much longer than 19", not lighter. That thing looks every bit of 5+lbs, so cop a chill.

I apologize. I'm a little fired up after a very long pair of 16 hour weekend ER shifts. We ran out of body bags....and we keep a lot on hand. Summer is in full bloom. You guys know I'm usually pretty chill. Need to hit the water and burn off a little stress!

Whenever you don't have the time to hit the water, use energy by working around the house, riding a bike, taking a walk, jog, etc. Using energy with a bit of force gets it out of you. |

I wouldn't doubt for a moment the commotion of the sunfish being caught in the area triggered the bass to react. |
