We were on the boat and got a wonderful view of a large bald eagle on the southern end of Zoar near the Stevenson Dam this past Saturday. Not that it is an extremely rare sighting, as there is an observatory up by the Shepaug Dam, but it is the first one I have seen there in any of the warmer months. What was amazing is I saw the bird diving in the mid day heat between several boats pulling tubes and skiers with a lot of wakes and boat traffic. It was no more than100' away from us. At first I thought it was one of the turkey vultures until I saw the white head and tail feathers. It was around 4pm and there was a front moving in threatening rain again so we were making our way back pretty quickly when we saw it dive just off the River View banquet facility. I slowed the boat just as it splashed down and grabbed what appeared to be a smaller fish. What a cool sight that made my day! |

Well, since you brought it up, hoppy (aka Mark) and I got a flyover from a mature bald eagle when we were on Lake McDonough on 07/01:
I've also seen bald eagles on West Branch Reservoir (aka Hogsback), Mount Tom Pond and in Hamburg Cove. It never gets old for me. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

One of the coolest things about fishing for trout up in Riverton is when I would get a flyover from the resident bald eagle up there. I would see it almost every morning I was up there. No doubt it had a belly full of DEEP trout. |

In February 2010 while ice fishing on West Twin, somebody left a pickerel dead on the ice. When 2 others and I arrived, we moved it to a more open area for birds to notice.
Later we see 2 bald eagles circling around. One of them made its move which would have been perfect on slow motion video. Dove down, slid on the ice, grabbed the fish, slid on the ice, and took off. |

Hey, Michael, you reminded me that I also saw a bald eagle land on the ice at Tyler Lake while ice fishing last Winter. It landed on the thinner ice near the open water in the middle of the lake. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hi,
You guys reminded me of my encounter with 2 Bald Eagles on Colebrook Res. 2 ice seasons ago, which I had posted about.
Was catching dink yellow perch and feeding them to the 2 eagles, on the ice, 15-20 ft. from me. Quite an experince seeing them that close.
This year I watched twice over West Hill the areial combat conducted by an Eagle chasing an Ospry which had caught a fish.
They will hound an Ospry till they drop the fish then steal it from them!
Watching the areial acrobatics is something to see !
