Water temp was 80.8 at the surface. Water was stained and bottom wasn't visible past 5 foot depth. Some area's were murky do to the wind stirring up the sand. Winds were calm in the morning and picked up to some 25MPH By afternoon.

We started the day stretching the legs on the Stratos and ran to the river inlet. We graphed a couple of humps in 15FOW that peeked at around 8FOW. We hit the humps with dropshots for about 1/2 hour of so with only a couple of bluegil nibbles. So we started hitting the shoreline with plastic worms and an SSR5 shad rap. I got the first SMB on my SSR. Caught on the surface after clearing a backlash. It leaped out of the water after smashing the lure. Luckily I had cleared the BL and was reeling in the slack. The worm my son was using didn't get any action, So he switched to a Zoom super fluk. He started getting fish. The first SMB he landed was spitting out shad or smelt. He caught a few more and got the only LMB of the day. We fished to the bridge and got a few that were breakin the surface. The fish were on the small side so we decided to make a run down to the coves on the lower east side of the lake. We dropshoted and cranked some ledges and a hump for a while but no good fish could be pulled from the deep water. So back to working the shoreline and again it was the zoom super fluk getting all the fish. My SSR didn't get bites under the surface. I got a couple just letting it float and they would smack it. So in order to keep up, I dug into my sons bag and pulled out his Berkley glup minnows. I fished them weighless on a spinning rod and was able to get into the action.

Mid afternoon we had a brief shower and the wind died down. Overcast sky and calm water brought the fish up to the surface again. We tried keeping the baits up and they were nailing them. Topwater also caught fish. This was the period that produce the biggest fish .Once the wind stirred up after the shower, We went back to slow falling plastics to finish the day. I did get a good bite on my DS and also caught a rainbow trout on a DT 10. My wife loves trout so in the well it went.

My son caught the best fish(as usual) at around 2 LBS. And I got a couple of decent 1 1/2 Lbs. My best came on the DS. But for the most part the fish were on the small side. We had a blast even though they were small. SMB at any size are fun. No pictures of the fish due to a dead camera battery. I won't let that happen again! We'll hit colebrook again soon! Smile

Great report and nice fishing!

With the SSR having a buoyancy that easily lets it come back to the surface fast and float, 2 ways of using it as a topwater are very lightly twitching it on or just beneath the surface and the other is after letting the wake clear after casting, give it a jerk and then again after it comes back to the surface.

I've gotten smallmouths at Candlewood doing that topwater jerk retrieve.

Thanks, I did try the SSR on a twitch/jerk retrieve, But did not get much action. The way the fish were acting, a still top water or a bait that was just under the surface sinking as slow as possible. I didn't bring my suspending baits jerk baits or I would have tried them. It was like you needed it stuck in their face to get them to bite.

Yesterday, there was only a small window of time, around noon, that I got any topwater action with a frog over some lily pads. The rest of the time, a wacky Senko fished very slowly was the only lure that got bites.

Exactly PECo, There were periods that the topwater worked, But for the most part the plastic fished weightless was the ticket. The odd part was we got not much bites on worms. But the fluks and minnows did well. We usually score with worms and grubs.

I was at Williams Pond, which is a very shallow lake. The wacky Senkos were mostly picked up off of the bottom. Half of the time, I never felt the bite. The heat must be getting to the fish. Maybe it's lowering the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water and slowing them down. My advice for fishermen right now is to either fish early or fish late.

I was throwing some superflukes this weekend too, but the only thing they got me was a sunburn! Glad to hear you did better.
Colebrook looks like an intimidating place to fish. I pass it regularly on my way up to NY and always wanted to give it a try but wouldn't know where to begin there.

I know their in there! 21" 4 pounder caught in the fall of 2010. DT10 crankbait fishing humps.
