Evening run on Cedar. 6 big boats and me. Water temp was 80* in the middle. It's not that big a lake so it was pretty crowded on the edges. There's a drop off on the east side that runs half the length of the lake. It goes from weeds to a bank down to 20', and then a gradual decent to 35. While the bass boat's were tossing in the lily's, I was making paddle runs behind them on the ledge. We were talking distance and they were getting skunked. I was tossing a carolina rigged zoom fluke parallel to the ledge at 15'. Got 4 between 1 and 2# in the first hour. I was also trailing a bruiser 4" watermelon/party frog screwlocked into a 4/0. I took a long sweeping turns out over 35' to get back in line with the ledge. My frog rod, in the holder doubled over and put the tip in the water. The sweet sound of a whining drag!! This bass was pissed off. I boated it with a fantastic fight from a LMB. It towed my canoe right back into my CR, which was still in the water, but I managed to stay clear. 4.4lbs...long and lean. I was so happy to see the bass boat behind me watching the whole affair. They clapped when I held it up on the scale. Banged a 3.2 on my next paddle down the weed ledge. New hummingbird is working great. Beautiful display of deep gardens and marking fish right where they should be. Skulking around the drop off's at 10-14 feet near the rising deep isolated weeds. Sorry about no pics. My ex was driving me nuts, so I locked my phone in the truck.

Nice job! I need to get a finder so I can get off the shoreline and find the fish.

Ahhh.....sweet contour!! It's not even the fish finder that matters. It's the depth, contour, and deep structure that makes the difference. I'm sure I didn't hit a single marked fish....but I knew where they were. The whole paddle up the west side I wasnt showing a single fish, and had not one bite. I thought the freakin thing was screwing up cause they're always in the deeper 40' south hole when the water warms up. Nothing...but it was overcast and cooler today. Maybe this pushed them across the pond to hunt the bank.

That's what I'm talking about...seeing the bottom. When I fish without a finder giving me depths and weedlines it really makes life rough. The more I learn about bass fishing the more I realize I really am fishing blind.

Spot on Dawg. When I went from a boat with color graphics to a canoe, I was fine pre-spawn and spawn....cause they were jumping up and down saying "catch me." Now that I'm hitting new spots and the summer is on, I at least needed to know something about the contour. Other wise it just looks like a big mirror out there. Carolina rig fishing and jigs are my favorite to fish in the summer, but you're just betting "OO" on the roulette wheel if you think you can go to a new place and fish something other than the edges. You can look at maps, but it's not the same as finding a "holy sh*t" spot in the contour.

Thanks for the report, I always look forward to your posts.

We use to fish Cedar alot back in the late 80's and early 90's. That spot was always great for running deap diving crankbaits through...digging up mud and bringing in bass!

Yup Mark....it's not a bad little hole. I'm pretty happy to have a spot like this 10 minutes from my house and work. I know all the people whose lab's go swimming for thrown logs and bait fish at the launch. Cept one. Some places you have to avoid the jet ski's. There's five dogs swimming when I launch. I almost lipped a yellow lab with a frog hook that was hanging off a rod in a holder coming in. Lady was like "thats not safe...you provoked her with all that "dangling stuff" And I'm a dog guy, so bare with me here....I might have said something about it being 50lb braid, and her being a tree hugger...and with the drag set properly, I could probably beach her obese lab if she didnt get too deep in the weeds and blow my leader....and then she started in on me about killing fish, and when I said I released all my fish today, I then was just cruel for doing so. This was all while her fat assed wet lab was now in my lap in the canoe as half of it was shored. I hugged the dog around the neck, and I know it liked me more than her....even though I told her to get the eff out of my boat. The conversation that followed between me and ms environmentalist will remain my little indiscretion. Cant make this shit up...I work in an ER and we shoot people like this up with haldol and tie them to a bed. Squaking about fish at a boat launch at a management lake while your misbehaved dog is in my boat. I beat feet out of there after I said my piece. Fish on! fat lady..bwahahah!!!

Connecticut does not have a statewide leash law, although it is illegal to allow dogs to roam. However, many local municipalities do prohibit unleashed dogs, especially in public parks. Many of the places that I fish are posted for this. I would have told her to control her dog.

A dog once hooked itself on one of my setups as I left the water. It was at Nod Brook WMA, where unleashed dogs are expressly permitted. However, the dog's owners' understood that it was their fault, not mine. I think that might have been because they were both fishing, too. Although many dog owners are idiots, not all of them are.
