New member Chris and I headed out onto the Reef Wednesday afternoon. High tide for Bridgeport was scheduled for 6:02pm. We fished the Reef for about 3 hours.

For the 3 hours we were out there, no topwater action for both of us.

No matter what plug you threw, those "things" were at it again. 3 plugs Chris threw were a Crystal Minnow, Red Fin, and a Flat Rap. I stuck with the Flat Rap.

He caught 1 with the Red Fin and 3 with the Crystal Minnow. Every other one he and I caught was on the 10cm Flat Rap. Both of us lost count but we had to have reached close to 50 combined. I even hit a double on the Flat Rap!!!

This was Chris's first time in waders and throwing plugs and poppers in the surf. He seemed to have enjoyed it and considered it a fun experience vs chunking. We plan on getting out in the surf more and I'll introduce him to more places.

A fly fisherman arrived around peak high tide. He wasn't getting anything except for "them". He and I discussed about recent action at the Reef. He was out there 2 weeks ago around the time my dad and I were there hitting the blues and he was into blues and stripers with bait around. For the past 1 1/2 or 2 weeks now, bait has left and "they" have taken over.

I caught at least 30 of those things in the past 3 days. They are hitting everything, bait and lures. There is a terrible outbreak of sea robins.

A few new experiences I've gotten recently with them are:

1 to 4 more following the one I have on the hook
Set the hook and lose it before another one takes over
See them follow your lure like a blue would and then do a little lure movement right in front and they hit
First time in saltwater I've gotten a double

Have you witnessed any of those so far?

I've also noticed an increase in size. Plenty of bigger ones out there this summer.

The first three I have experienced. I wonder why they are so bad this year.

Hi,

Hope you guys know that "Sea Robin" tails are some of the sweetest flakest white meat you can eat !

Some people have said this could have something to do with how much cleaner the water has gotten in recent years.

I'll have to try them soon. I've always heard that they were good eating.

You fillet the tails where the flaky white meat is. Like in this video I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NMh1hcIcEw
Then you cook them.

I have also used the tails for bait. They work pretty well, because their tail fillets look just like a bait fish in water.

My Dad, my grandpa, my dad's friend and I went fishing in my usual spot today and the four of us combined must've caught at least 30 sea robins in 2 or 3 hours. And then, I stepped on a sea robin and it's fin spike penetrated my shoe and sock and stabbed my foot. Mad
I've never seen this many sea robins around. Evil or Very Mad They may be eating all the fluke babies and eggs.

Today at Charles Island and Silver Sands, I caught what I'd consider a PB sea robin. It had the head of a southern flathead and a huge tail! It was pulling like a bluefish on my 10lb line.
