Hit up the Salmon River in Colchester with 2 of my buddies today. It was the worst it has ever been. This was my first time going there since the week after opening day. I caught 10 trout that day and that was an awesome trip. This time I caught 1 sunfish in the 6 hours I was there. I never knew there was sunfish in there and I hate those things. My friend caught 2 rainbow trout about 13' each as well as 2 salmon and 1 sunfish. My other friend caught 1 salmon and 1 sunfish. When I go to the Salmon, I want trout, not sunfish or salmon. In my opinion, this place is done until the next stocking in fall. Anyone have luck there recently? |

There are only juvenile Salmon in the Salmon River. They are not fun to catch amd only get in the way of trout. The biggest I have caught there was about 5' and they put up about as good a fight as a goldfish. Whenever the trout aren't biting, the salmon usually are. |

I was using meal worms, trout worms, and small shiners. The shiners got me the sunfish. I was right near the end of the river way past the bridge. Sorry I'm not too familiar with this place as i've only fished here less than 10 times. |

If you fish there around opening day, you will pretty much only get trout since they are heavily stocked. I find either very early or very late in the season all you get is salmon. |

the salmon river has a huge helgramite hatch. well maybe it's not called a hatch. but during the summer at some point you can find lots of huge helgramites under the partially submerged/wet rocks. this is also true with the rocky parts of the Farmington river. collect a few of these creepy bastards and you have some great local bait for the day. hook them through the head once with a small trout hook on a leader with a swivel and a slip sinker above the swivel heavy enough to get and hold the bug down in the deeper pools. if there are no trout left in the pools you are fishing, there should be smallmouth. |
