Fished the river for 5 hours today 7:30am - noonish. Started out moving up river, moving against the tide (not fun!)..The surface temperature on the water was ranging from 72-77 degrees (amazingly warm). Wind was about 5mph with the slight breeze. Towards 10am or so the breeze picked up. It was a dissapointing day with several missed hooksets...ugh. Used my new Rapala Clackin Crank in Crawdad color. Landed 2 Pickerel - 21" and 22", 1 LMB that was 13", and a nice fat 13" Crappie. All caught between 4-8 FOW. As the sun came out, the bite died down - even in the shades.
The tide going out, while I'm going against it in the morning...
Here's my 22 inch Pickerel

Hey Steve what area of the river do you fish? I fish up in Enfield from a Kayak and catch smallmouths, I haven't been to the lower rive in a kayak yet, but fish the East Hartford shore line as a kid where the Podunk enters and caught all kinds of fish there. Where would you suggest for a kayak.
Second question I see you have a Hummingbird, which model, how do you like it and how much do you rely on it and is it used mainly for depth and changes or also for fish. All those were in one sentence so it counts as one question.
Thanks Mase |

Hamburg Cove in Lyme/Essex area is a good spot. Can be crazy with all the people out there, but it can be a good place to paddle. There is a spot to launch inside there (Phil aka PECo) knows where. I usually launch at the Baldwin Bridge and take my boat north to get there. There is some spots on the Mattabesset where you can also take your yak....middletown area near Wesleyan University. The good thing is the opportunities are sometimes endless because you don't need a trailered launch unlike me. As far as the finder, its a Humminbird PiranhaMax 170. It's okay, it came with my boat. I'll be 100% honest I use it, but I don't use it enough. It's good for scanning structure on the bottom and mapping the area. It has a dual beam as well. I don't use it to mark fish really anymore because I don't trust it for that - mostly just to scan the bottom, see the depth, and surface temp. Hope that answers your questions. _________________ Steve |

i have the same model and it seems to be pretty on point. When we were on a slow drift in 40 ft of water or so last weekend it was showing us the fluke moments before our rigs would pass by them. (or may have been fish that the fluke were targeting) |
